I need cup holders. What a bad design idea in my opinion.

Is it possible to take the empty area above the ashtray out and put a head unit in there ( or both the ashtray and empty area above for a double din navigation unit) then get like a "push in/pop out" cup holder for where the original head unit single din was?

I know I saw that thing for my old mk4 but I'm not sure it it would work like that for the mk2. Or where exactly I saw it 4 years ago.

Anyone have any other cup holder solutions?

just get a hot chick to ride shotgun and hold your cup for you...that's what i do. OP, if you're not into chicks, a dude can hold your cup too.

I've read that these can be fitted into the DIN above the ashtray.

      http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Cup-Holder-In...item519eb77f08

You can also modify a MK3 console to work in your MK2 console.
This is the way i went.

If Volkswagen wanted me to have cupholders, they would have given me cupholders.

kinda hard to find a decent passat double cup holder

you can get a similar single cup holder on ebay for about 5 bucks.
      thats what i did

if youre by urself put ur drink in it
if you have a passenger, put ur drink in and make ur passenger old their drink
      hellafunctional

I know this might sound shocking, but the mk2 was not designed with North Americans in mind. Its not a European custom to drive around drinking pops or what ever we do over here.

      Cupholders? Mk 2?

What do you think that space between the parking brake lever and the seat is for?

i haven't seen one in YEARS! at one point i bought out most of the U.S. dealer inventory (30ish units) but sold them all a long time ago.

german cars don't have cup holders for a reason... drinking and driving (no matter what the beverage) is NOT safe.

enjoy the spartan nature of you car. i've gone the cup holder route... it wasn't worth the mess.

I wedge my water bottle between the parking brake and the passenger seat. Works perfectly.

      WIN

But seriously speaking I made my own cup holder. I don't have a pic but it's basically wood, reinforced with sheet metal around the cup circles, and then an L at the screw for the Hand Brake Surround. I'll take a pic when I get the car back from the shop.

But I have been wanting to buy this. It looks tons better than my DIY one.

Would this work for an mk2 or would i need to mod it? An arm rest would be nice too!

It's the little things in life, coffee on a morning drive on some windy turns, relaxing.

I want a cup holder damn it! Lol.

I think right now I'm leaning toward the mk3 center console. Is that just a straight and easy swap or is it a mod to make it work?

Also can I buy that console new or is it worth it for me to go scouring a junk yard for one?

Did you see the diagram in the auction? It has a flat base and two "legs" to straddle an e-brake and mount to a flat surface. The e-brake area is far from flat so yeah you're going to have to make it work.

There are some DIYs on this. You'll just have to search. But in short, you will have to gut the front and perform console surgery.
