    He has some bad habits, like using his middle finger to fire He needs to work on his breathing and take his time lining up his target. At ~50 yards, he could get almost all his shots within an 8 inch circle, so not too shabby for his first time firing it.

    Marlin Model 60. Not a bad little rifle. Shoots to the right a bit, though. Not sure how I'm going to fix that. Not a lot of adjustment in the open sights.

    the rear sight base on those rifles (and many others too) are installed via a dovetail. to adjust you simply tap the sight base to the right or left. remember that for the rear sight you adjust it in the same direction you want the point of impact to adjust. a small punch and a hammer are usually sufficient to shift the sight, in a pinch a nail or sometimes even a spent (centerfire) casing can be used in place of a punch. just make sure you put the force on the dovetail and not on the upper portion of the sight base or you could break things.

    I just looked at the ex's model 60. Are you sure he has a good sight picture? Not canting the rifle?

    The rear sight can be drifted in the dovetail just be sure it is the sight, not an inexperienced shooter.

    no, his shots are all over the place Mine were all to the right of the center of target about 2 inches at 50 yards. I explained sight picture/sight alignment to him and how to place the target at the top of the from sight post. I think he's just inexperienced. He told me it's not as easy as Call of Duty makes it seem. Yes, Brendan, lots and lots of practice and you can shoot groups like that, too.

    Late to the party.

    Good job getting the boy into shooting.

    My oldest dropped his first varmit this past weekend with the 597.
    We've had a run on groundhogs for some reason.
