If you're going to do something, I say do it right and get something really special. Beyond getting a car that YOU really want, you should consider parts availability/support of owners clubs a car that will appreciate in value so you can cover the costs of fixing it up (in case you have to sell it).

I'd suggest looking into low volume fiberglass cars of the 50's and sixties. They were usually based upon an existing chassis and reasonably inexpensive. They aren't common, but they can be had for money that is not too silly.
