Okay its an 02 3.0L quattro with 120,000 miles and I have misfires only on one bank. Cylinder 4, 5, and 6, along with random multiple. The check engine light flashes at idle and at low rpm cruising speeds. I've replaced both valve cover gaskets and that 4, 5, 6 bank is still leaking and I've checked the bolt torque and no cracks are present on the valve cover so obviously that bank is running lean some how.
Here's what I"ve already replaced trying to source the misfires out
-spark plugs bosch iridiums
-all 6 coils
-pcv valve and related hoses
-all vaccum lines with braided vacuum line from the dealer routed according to diagram from the dealer
-Intake manifold gaskets
-Intake shift rod (which was broken anyway)
-thoroughly cleaned the intake manifold before reinstallation
-all 6 coil pack connectors
I'm not throwing cam sensor codes, MAF codes, or system too lean/rich codes, just the misfire codes.
What else could it be? I'm stumped
There's a curved shaped sensor on the front below the valve cover directly behind the cam gears. What is that sensor?
The reason i ask is because it doesn't fit tight like the same sensor on the other side. I wonder if that's my problem.
What is this I'm pointing at?
Its really loose fitting on my engine compared to the one on the passenger side
have you tried to replace the cam position sensor? If your only experiencing it on one side; try to swap the sensors you have now.. If the misfires follow the sensor, there's your problem. Im having the random misfire as well (not on the same bank though).. havent replaced a lot, but is running fine for now..
okay according to my beloved vagcom misfire counter, cylinder 6 misfires more then cylinder 5 and cylinder 5 misfires more then cylinder 4.
Any input?
That rules out the cams being out of time on that one bank especially since i have no cam sensor and crank sensor codes. I also tried flip-flopping the cam sensors before I found this information.
I also am now showing coolant temp sensor circuit high intermitent with the engine running but it doesn't store
Okay I've checked the wiring harness on that bank for cracks or damage. I cleaned the connectors on the fuel injectors and they fit tight and the coil pack connectors are new and there are no defects on that harness either. I checked the ground wire that comes off the harness and bolts to the cylinder head. Everything looks good.
I'm so stumped.
Could I have bad fuel injectors?
Could I have an ecu problem?
Are the ECUs interchangable between automatic and manual cars? If they are I have a buddy that will let me try his automatic ecu on my car to see if that changes anything.
I actually just got a job at a VW/audi shop and I've figured out it is the cam adjusters in the cam gears on bank 2. They aren't adjusting the cam timing properly
