Thank you so much for this thread, great find! Now we just need to know if rear disc conversion will work without any modification to the braking system (minus rears) or ABS module.
Will not be possible due to ABS issues. Already asked Mike Tansey @ VW.

Figured..... my abs p/n didn't match any with rear disc. Can always put R brakes up front, but it would look like quagmire's left hand after he discovered the internet.

I'll get pics when done with steering wheel buttons keep this on topic lol

Is Mike from VW or a VW dealer? What exactly did he say as the reason why the swap isn't possible?

Different p/n's don't necessarily mean it's not doable.

All abs systems (ATM machine, PIN number...) work pretty much the same. The brain that operates the m/c gets its info by measuring individual wheel speeds. I'm wondering how changing from drums to discs would hinder a 2.5 Jetta's abs? Wheel diameter is still the same and I have a hard time believing the disc brake abs rings are radically different than those found on drum brake cars. But if they are, maybe it's not hard to use the rings from the drum brakes with the discs?

Sorry OP for going off topic - if this is covered somewhere else a link would be greatly appreciated.

    It is quite off topic.

Regardless, Mike works at VW as a technician -- easily one of the more brilliant out there and the only reason I even bother keeping in contact with my home dealership. He also owns Euro-Werks and has plenty of features for his builds and talent.

Honestly, I trust his word on this and his confirmation that it could easily push over a grand to do and complete.

What he may know is more than myself so I take his word on it. Additionally, I would prefer not to disable my ABS on a DD....

I've given up complete hope on bothering.

Edit: If I had more information as to why it wouldn't work, I would elaborate, but I don't. Next time I see him, I will ask him to explain and go in depth.

I did it wrong at first and messed up the wheel a little but sitck the screw driver in between the latch and the wheel toward the top not the bottom.

I accidently ended up chewing up some of the wheel with the screwdriver because I thought you had to stick it in the bottom larger part of the release hole.

I did confirm that the sel and diesels use stalk controls. New stalk and possibly steering column module may be needed like the mkv. I can't confirm this, however. The steering wheel module is LIN bussed to the column module so that is why the wheel buttons are such an easy retrofit. ONE wire is needed for the buttons to work and that is why if the car has left buttons the right ones will work....the communication wire is already there.

Back to the ABS topic... The abs operation is not a factor because VW adapted different springs to be used on the drums so ABS operation WOULD work for drum brakes. The ABS sensor is in the wheel bearing and the bearing is the same for disc vs drum cars. MY only question to VW would be where is the proportioning valve? It must be within the ABS module internal valving and unless VW really engineered the drums well, I can't see the same abs module being used with disc and drum. The prop valve on every other car with drum rears has a prop valve that makes the rears engage first so the extra slack in the drum shoes are taken up.... then as pressure increases the front brakes make contact....then at a certain point the rears are no longer allowed more pressure or the wheel will lock up.
can you start your own thread and not clutter this one with questions and information about ABS?

    Thanks.

I have a '12 se + convince. I see that all I need is the switch for it to work. where is the harness that plugs into the back of the new switch or does the harness come with the switch? I didn't see it in the photos in the beginning.....just where it plugs in.

also what's the p/n# for the switch I need? I saw someone posted 2 different ones above. Not sure which one I need.

I hope the wire comes with the new switch. I ordered mine from paul at keefer vw. I called him and I gave him both part numbers and he said the second one is out of stock and the more expensive one he could get. Not a big deal cause i think it was only like 8 buck difference or something like that. Anywho with the 25% of I believe shipped to my house it was like 150 or something. I wasn't really did not pay attention cause I was so excited and didnt care what the price was (within reason).

It's amazing....I used the mpg thingy and kept my speed to 60-65 mph. I better judged lights when stopping and I drove to brooklyn and back....about 100 miles. On the way there I got 37 mpg. Figuring this can't be right I wanted to see what I got on the way back. Several hours later I left my friends place and drove back. this time there was an accident on the BQE and some normal traffic elsewhere. This is what I got on my return trip. As you can see driving with fuel econ in mind and this nifty MFI trick!
