Thanks Jettsy for the post and the details on how to do this. The screen shots of VCDS really helped. I love flipping thru the menu while driving. Comparing the digital speedo to the analog and my gps it is only off by 1 mph. The only thing that I wish I could change was menu 1 would not reset everytime I restart my car. For anyone that knows, are the left and right buttons, and the return only for gps models?

Jettsy you sir get 6 of these and a big .

    You're welcome.

Those buttons your referring to are actually for the full cluster only (to change songs, nav directions, etc)

    Cheers

Finished this MOD yesterday - VERY COOL!

Anyone know if it also displays the engine oil temperature as the owner's manual states?

no. car lacks the sensor to display that. (of course the car it self monitors that though)

Any news on changing out the cluster for a full MFD?

despite what people say, I have every reason to believe it will.

One project for me at a time though. I plan on doing that down the road once I get the parts at a reasonable price.

Only issues you would have are certain features not available because certain sensors do not exist.

additional software/hardware will definitely be needed to code and read clusters and get around coding keys and defeating the IMMO in the cluster.

    in the meantime, enjoy this.

Hey guys I just pulled my airbag off to double check the part number that was posted earlier in this thread. Turns out for the SE with sunroof and convenience the part number is 5K0-971-584-C. Not sure what the difference between the two is but just putting it out there.

NEW UPDATE: Verebs1 has discovered that this will partially work in all jettas with out retrofit. When your gas light chimes on, the "Miles left" will show on the mfd. All you need to is turn on the feature in vcds as mentioned below.

As you can see my steering wheel is the standard Jetta S wheel with no controls and can not accept controls, and my wiper stalk is standard and not TDI.

I was playing with the mirror control (ignition on engine off) and the dash chimed, I look up and well as you can see I now have miles til empty displayed!

    You're welcome LOL

I am not sure what exactly enabled this because I didn't see any results until my low gas warning came on. The two things that could have caused this are, under central electric, enable MFSW in coding (07). And I also enabled MFSW in instruments, under adaptation. The miles to empty may go back to outside temp after I fill up the tank but I won't know until I fill up. For right now every start of the engine it displays the miles until empty. Please note if you don't have right side controls right now (SE with conv.) and or can not ever add them without adding a new steering wheel (S & SE without conv.?) [Any car with an S wheel] you may not be able to go back to the outside temp display unless you change the coding back or add the controls/new MFSW.

I bet anything it will just return to temp when you fill it up. I had mfd in my mk6 golf and it would default to display mileage left when the gas light came on

How come no one is talking about the 2nd from the end option?! (oil temperature!)
This VAG COM stuff is all new to me.
I have a '12 TDI and I can see how many miles I have left per tank, set a chime at xxx mph, average fuel consumption, range, average speed, digital speed, etc, etc.... by using the wiper stalk buttons.
I 99% sure my car doesnt tell me engine oil temp. I would love to see engine temp.

that is the one thing it doesn't display...I think its because the sensor isn't wired up to the cluster. you can hook up vcds to tell you your oil temp however (useless)

As Jettsy said, no. But when we were talking today he mentioned something that is an interesting point. The "Outside Temperature" may come back if the frost warning were to come on (39*F). The only way to cycle would be to install a right side switch. Either the one on the steering wheel or the TDI style wiper stalk.

Yeah same here. BTW it would appear that adding the wiper stalk is the less expensive option however I have no idea how that connects to the car. I know the wheel connects through the clockspring which *should* be plug and play.

Thanks for the write up on this and bringing it to light. 1 thing that happened to me after installing the switch is the horn stopped working. I looked all over and couldn't find any broken wires. I thought I had broken the clock spring. I finally found that there is a small black wire with something that looks like a butt connector on the end that connects to the ring on the horn contacts. It got pulled off when I removed the airbag. So if anyone installs the switch and has no horn afterwards check the black wire that connects the horn contacts.
