Replaced my front driver side wheel bearing with a janky local mechanic and got it back and I quickly bolted it back on since this is my daily driver. Took it a half mile down the road and just as I slowed to turn around the wheel locked up. Towed it home and the in is seized in the spindle. Did I misplace a washer somewhere? What happend? And how can I prevent this from happening? Should I just buy a new spindle bearing hub assembly? Thanks. Been digin this forum for a while now.

    ...hmm ok

yes there is a washer behind the large 30mm nut

the torque for the nut is 150lbs/ft OR MORE but less than 250lbs/ft

you NEVER reuse that nut, always replace with new

why your bearing locked up? i dont know.....

normally the axle might not fit 100mm or 90mm...but since you didnt change anything except a bearing....

yes you can get the spindle+bearing+hub all completely assembled from http://www.partsplaceinc.com/

Thanks. Is there a washer that goes between the cv and spindle? It looks like the hub went too far in and now the outer metal casing of the spindle is against the hub

Did you swap a new axle or outer CV on that same side when you did the wheel bearing? GTI's have a slightly different spindle than non GTI's and most of the available aftermarket axles and CV's are for the non-GTI's and they will hit the spindle and lock up the wheel.

Only washer is on the outside of the hub carrier bearing, just behind the large 30mm axle nut.

Guess you will have to disassemble the hub carrier (ie spindle) and do a post morten inspection. Apparently some portion of the bearing installation was not correct.

    Cheers, WWR.

Update. Tore it apart and there was lots of fused metal junk all over my hub so I hit it with my grinder to smooth it out. Got it pressed in and put back on my car and torque the axle nut then backed it up half a turn as recommended by the dude down the way. Rolled around my yard a bit them set off down the road. Got to third gear and I heard and felt bad grinding like it was locking up again. Loosened the nut another full turn and eased it home. Is that about right? Or maybe the guy I bought the car from put the 100mm driveshaft in and not the 90mm?

local dude down the road doesn't know jack.

if its a 90 vs 100mm mismatch it is obvious.

I would venture your bearing is trashed and wouldn't trust the hub after what it has been subjected to.

a washer goes on the outside, then the big nut. I torque the nuts to 195 ft lbs.

if you roll the car without the axle in the bearing, you ruin the bearing. It has to have the stub axle for support.

Agreed, your local dude is an idiot about VW's.

Your bearing is done for now, if it wasnt before from an improper install.

I have a set of knuckles with new bearings and hubs, with TIG welded studs and propper ball-seat nuts if you need them. Boxed and ready to go.

no, either the local dude is a total retard or you mistook his information. Front wheel bearings you do not loosen up after torquing them down. Rear wheel bearings are the ones you tighten then loosen up.

Time to go buy another bearing and redo your mistake and buy a bentley manual too.

Well its doing fine... handles well and rolls fine it seems. Not heat or rubbing. Drove over 100 miles on it yesterday. But I do plan to get a new hub soon.
