sounds like you've got POS wheels & tires, not car.

Honestly I guess that gives some perspective on how loyal Volkswagen owners are since you always come back.

Brought it to the stealership cause it was leaking coolant.

They decided to do my 20k service too. Apparently it's taking into tomorrow so I got a sh*t brown Jetta for a loaner. 2.5SEL though. Not too bad.

Bringing my GTI to the dealership tomorrow too. Burning smell from the front right part of the car. Will probably have them look at the dribbling rear windshield while I'm at it.

Is Stage 3 worth it over K04...? Honest opinions needed.

Too many factors for such a question

    - Your wallet size

    - your use for the car

    - current mods

    - money for supporting mods for the Stage III

    - how long do you plan on keeping the car

    - Willing to spend money on both.. just trying to find better performance/dollar deal. H.S Tuning offers $2700 installed for K04 and they are only a couple hours away from me. I can make a day out of it and come back with a K04.

    - Come next year, the GTI will not be my daily driver.

    - Stage 2 with intake and turboback exhaust. K04 can use all of the mods that I have.

    - Stage 3 will require an intercooler and different downpipe/midpipe while I can use the stock intercooler with K04.

    - I plan on keeping it for a while and I'll have another daily driver to put the miles on so the GTI won't be racking up 20-25K miles per year.

The K04 puts up some very stout numbers and with Stage 3 I will only be getting about 40 more peak horsepower at the price of ~ $4,000 more if you factor in intercooler and installation. Quite a bit of money if you ask me. To sum it up, does the Stage 3 kit offer a $4,000 increase in performance over the K04... probably not.

And Save money if you want to do the timing chain replacement with the kit from ECS Tuning to avoid the engine failure.

I think you've sorta answered your own question buddy!

K04 or Stg 3+. Those should be your only options.

Would an S3 intercooler be sufficient or find something a little bit larger?

Car has about 43K on it right now. Also has extended warranty. Zimmy's thread kinda scares me though.

    Don't talk smack. PM sent.
I realized that after I posted it. 3+ is going to cost big $$ though.

Yea, I have 42,700 miles as of right now.. I am very concerned about it. I am thinking that I may have the old style tensioner on the right. On the left is the new revised. http://www.golfmk6.com/forums/showpo...4&postcount=77

Dropped the car off at the dealer to have the dribbling windshield fixed and to look into the burning smell. Turns out the latter was a grocery bag that got under my car.

    .

S3 is sufficient but most likely you'll want more power, and then you'll want the APR IC. It's only $999 when on sale, whereas the S3 is $299 shipped. I'd rather put in an IC once and spend the money once then do it all twice. If you're looking at Stage III then you obviously have a slightly obese wallet, I'd just get an APR IC and call it a day. It's best to just get all the little stuff out of the way before deciding on a K04 or a BT setup.

Bud has the S3 IC's for $299 shipped to your doorstep in case anyone was curious

Also, how exactly do TSB's work? If VW puts one out then isn't your dealership obligated to apply that TSB to your car? Or do problems/issues have to arise first? If you can just have the TSB applied, then get the TSB number from Zimmy and have your dealer do the timing chain tensioner TSB and you're good to go.
(again, not sure how that works though)

If you plan to stick with the K04 though, will you notice any difference between the APR and S3 IC? It gets to maybe 100ºF here in NY/NJ during the summer months.

I totally agree with you, do it once, do it right, but if the APR is overkill for the K04 application, I have no problem saving the $700.

    Thanks guys.

S3 intercooler is probably more than sufficient for the K04 and how I drive. (I don't track the car and it doesn't get crazy hot here in MI)
