so recently, while rummaging through my mom's garage, i found THREE Electromotive ignition units my dad used when he helped out with ARCA trucks here locally. they're set up for 4cyl applications,
two of them are HPX systems, and one is HPV-1.

does anyone know how i would wire this up to work with the EFI system on a ABA motor?

    my main concerns are.....
what happens with the knock sensor?
what happens with the cam sensor?
how would i wire this in so the ECU can work with it? or do you?
if i can't wire it into the ECU, does that mean i just have to watch the timing to make sure it's not messing things up?

if some people could let me know if i could make this work on my project, i'd really like to know the info. my dad used them on carburated engines so it was a little easier to do.....i know i've seen people use these on ABA motors i'm just not sure how to go about hooking one up.

Anything's possible with enough time and money...

Post some pics, diagrams, specs, etc of exactly what you've got. I haven't heard of this system before. What are you expecting to gain?

i called Electromotive, he said this system is supposed to be used with like, carb'd motors.....getting it to work with fuel injection isn't totally impossible but he said it would either somehow have to have the crank trigger wires for the HPX unit wired into the crank sensor wiring on the factory wiring harness (which may not work because it may not share the signal with the HPX unit)

otherwise i'd have to set up another crank trigger wheel.

and i was looking to gain no more distributor headaches, lol

plus this thing is supposed to have a much more efficient and hotter spark.

but i've decided to put them up for sale if anyone's interested, i'll post em up in the classifieds. again, these units are supposed to work with carb'd motors, you can use them on fuel injection but it's easier with carb'd motors.... and the best part is you can use a ABA trigger wheel, and you can probably wire the stock crank sensor onto their wires and put it in the stock location.

Thee is a catch with the older electromotive crankfire kits. If they break you are out of luck as electromotive no longer services them. Been there done that.

that's not true, i've called them about it to find out information and the guy said i could send them in to have them checked for $55, and they could fix the issues if there was anything wrong with them (for an additional fee, no doubt). i have 2 HPX units and one HPV-1 unit and they all should be in working order.

They tell you that to get the $55 from you. I have been through this with 5 customers in the last 3 years.

Regardless of if they work or can be repaired or not, using one to replace the ignition side of a factory ABA motronic ecu will be very very tough. The biggest problem is the crank sensor. Yes I know that both the ABA and electromotive use a 60-2 tooth wheel, but they also both need a variable reluctor sine wave to trigger and you can't share that type of signal. If it was a hall effect square wave you could.
