Thread: Anyone running a Diehard Platinum?

  1. 04-20-2012 02:19 PM #1
I'm looking for a new battery for the R32, especially since I got the new truck and the car is way more of a weekend car than before. I know a lot of folks like red or yellow top optimal, but I've heard that they're not as good as they used to be and the Diehard Platinum is basically a rebadged mil-spec Odyssey.

Sears says they don't have one that will fit the car, but I figured if the group 35 Optima fits then why wouldn't a group 35 DHP? So anyone using one?

My battery died last Christmas and since my Jetta's had the same Optima in it for 10 years now, I was going to get the same one for my .:R. I checked in with a number of people, including the local folks at Batteries Plus, and they ALL said Optima batteries aren't what they used to be. I believe the Batteries Plus guys also mentioned that they're now built in a different facility or something like that too.

Anyhow, to keep me in line with the Optima-type 'class' of batteries, they recommended me the Odyssey X2 (SLI47AGM). It's an Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) - type battery, which is also resistant to vibration. It has an OEM fit, so you can use the existing battery cover, insulating pad, cables, and mount.

Tell them you want a battery for an Audi TT 3.2. Same thing. They just don't list R32.

If I remember correctly the one you want is the 35R red top. I think the 35 has the terminals backwards. And yeah I don't think they are what they used to be... I actually bought one and then had a slew of problems I couldn't figure out because I was SURE it couldn't be the new optima... Sure enough took it to get tested and it had two bad cells. swapped it and have been problem free since

Well, that's their version of it, right? It's not an Odyssey. When I called it's made by Deka I guess but out-specs the Odyssey for less money. Dunno about quality, though.
