Replacing a starter on an automatic

I plan on installing a starter relay that is recommended by most here, but just in case I need to replace the starter itself how do I access it from below?
Since I have the single outlet downpipe with those damn C clamps on for now, could I remove the driveshaft instead? The starter is right behind the driveshaft too.

I did the same thing to my 87 about a year ago

with the car up on ramps you can access the starter pretty easily..

take off the heat shield attached to the starter, then there are 3 bolts holding the starter in place

If you can find the cabriolet forum on this site, there is a great pictorial write up about fixing a toque convertor seal... there are awesome helpful photos of removing the starter.

Get is raised up enough to work under and the task is not very difficult

Still couldn't start the car and I never replaced the starter since it is only 2 months old, so I figured I"ll try some tests before blowing more money. First I installed the solenoid relay to solve the heat soak problem we get with the automatics but that didn't get my car to crank.(I wasn't getting the typical wait and cool down and start up again). But installed anyway for the future. Then after 2 days of fooling around with the steering wheel removal and getting access to the ignition switch I replaced the switch hoping for some results. Nada. Then I tried the bypassing of the starter interlock relay (92) and that worked perfectly. Wow a very long 3 days nailing this one down on my own.
BTW the starter interlock relay (92) is no longer in production but at least now we know we can bypass that relay and start the car without it.

Does anyone think I should still install a heat shield on this starter even though I have the solenoid relay installed?

Definitely reinstall the heat shield. I made one from the aluminum insulation above the muffler from a junker. used an old leather glove to protect the solenoid secured with black tape. Then I used a large hose clamp to secure the heat shield around the starter. Easy to install and remove at a later dated. My car was very rusty and the original heat shield was toast. After several years I removed the started and the solenoid was in perfect shape.
