Thread: 84 GTI dash speakers install question

  1. 04-20-2012 06:48 PM #1
Hi. Hoping for a little help. I have a pretty original 84 GTI that I want to install 3.5 inch front dash speakers in. Im not looking to carve up the interior but rather use the stock dash speaker locations . When I remove the speaker covers there is nothing to attach the 3.5 inch speakers too. I'm not sure if a previous owner cut the original speaker mounting tabs or whatever to install bigger speakers or if there is some part missing (although I don't know what it would attach to either). I'm thinking I'll have to macgyver some brackets - maybe out of flexible metal strapping.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Mark

I had a similar problem with my old GTI, I ended up using double sided tape to attach the speaker to the back of the plastic grill, not perfect but it worked.

Just make sure you find some speakers that the tweeters dont stick up too much, I had to take back the first set I bought and hunt around for ones that were flush.

There are screw in metal brackets that are suppose to be there.
I have an extra set if you need them.
