Thread: Request for EYP Transmission Solenoid Figures and Charts

  1. 04-21-2012 02:44 AM #1
Would be grateful if anyone could post EYP Transmission Solenoid Figures and Charts and how can I test in harness. Have a 2003 Jetta 1.8T w/5 Speed Automatic, 108k miles. Within last week, "intermittantly" when engaging Reverse, engine rev's as if in Neutral. Yet today, no problem engaging reverse before and after several mile drive and ~ 6 trials in driveway from forward to reverse and back again..... Therefore, I am not convinced it is a clutch pack, that anyting has "failed" or it is a "plugged" filter as the forward gears and shift points all work well. Something electrical makes sense and when I came across "solenoids" in this forum, it seems worth a try before jumping to the $4950 quote for tranny replacement as no one I have called around here is willing to work on the 5 Speed Automatics....say there are no parts available....
PS. Checked the fluid, level is fine. Checked the shift mechanism, all is fine.
    Thank you

Please read the FAQ and use the search function. VW 09A solenoids are the same for all the tranny codes, so you can use the troubleshooting info already posted.

No reverse on 09A, especially when cold and improving when the car warms up, is well covered here in many previous posts. And yes, usually that can be fixed with a solenoid, or better yet, a set of all nine solenoids.

Any good independent VW mechanic should be able to change the solenoids for you, especially if you get the parts. About $360 for the set of nine solenoids.

    Good luck

Just want to thank the "experts" on this forum and let the rest know what I did to troubleshoot and repair.
Had no reverse when cold and took these steps.... A) pulled fuse for ETC/ ETM and reverse worked but tranny goes into default and forward is 3rd gear only....I am assuming it was 3rd as it was very boggy and I did not want to overheat plates / fluid so I did not drive it... B) found wire for solenoid N90 (lilac colored) and snipped it (hoping to just disable as I though it was only 3rd level of redundancy (need foot on brake and push button on shifter to get reverse)), got reverse and 1-3 in forward but no 4 & 5....would downshift 3-1....which surprised us.... C) because of these shift problems, had local garage follow instructions on this forum for pulling and accessing solenoid and he changed N90 for 4 hours labour plus the cost of the solenoid. Total bill a bit less than 1/10th the cost of a VW Remanufactured tranny installed by a local tranny shop.....the tranny shops around here do not recommed the "internet / online" units in case there is a problem.

    Thanks again.......

None of this "testing" is conclusive on anything.

If someone has "intermittant no reverse" definatly they should try a n90 solenoid though.

Sometimes if it sticks solid it could be "no reverse" as opposed to "intermittant no reverse" though so it might be worth trying there also.

    1. No reverse when cold.....therefore I parked overnight enabling to go forward on start, like on street, on cold start, no reverse.....drive less than 1/2 mile, stop, and reverse works......

    2. Cold soak overnight, start in morning, fwd but no reverse, pull fuse #31, reverse works, reinstall fuse #31, no reverse........drive fwd for less than 1/2 mile, stop, reverse works.

    3. Check wiring diagram on this thread.....does it not show that N90 is to stop engaging reverse while in forward motion....any gear!

Pulled pan, changed N90 ONLY, now reverse works always when selected, cold or hot.....over a month now.
