Seems legit with 73k miles. I hear the engine is a massive headache if something goes wrong. Is this true?

Cam tensioners seem to go bad and the engine has to come all the way out of the car. Basically anything that goes wrong with the car, they have to take the engine out to fix it. It's not all that unreliable just incredibly difficult to work on.

I mean, these things cost about 40 large when the were new. Any car that is that expensive from the factory is going to be expensive to maintain. I had shopped a few before we bought the v6 passat, the W8 is incredibly alluring but in the end I got scared away from it.

w8 is not all its thought to be, it does not make much more power than the v6 and has many many problem, a thermostate for that thing to be replaced at the dealer is over 1000 dollars, cam tensioners go out, oil leaks from certain areas, hid bulbs going out that cost 200 for the bulb.

the only one i would own is if i could find a six speed manual they are rare and pretty fun to drive. i mean common you have to removed intake manifld pieces to do spark plugs.

there is more to just giving you a little warning.

Buy it and buy full coverage insurance, and when it cost more to fix than the car is worth. Rallye the piss out of it and go up in the mountains and drive it off a cliff=profit.

This is why everybody's insurance is higher than it should be.

unfortunately the W8 passat is more of a novelty than it is a fantastic car. There aren't many mods available for it because it has such a unique drivetrain. I'm not even sure if the rear end/suspension is the same as other 4 motion passats, but I'm sure that the front is still the same 4 link suspension as other b5s. The W8 may as well have been a prototype rather than a production car because a lot of the creature comforts they initiated on the W8 have ended up being used in other cars (Bi-xenon, map light, steering wheel radio controls, the W-style block, etc). The v-6 passat is the same in that you have to remove the front clip to do just about anything to it, so I don't really see the difference. I've honestly never seen a manual W8 though, so that's kind of neat. I would say that 8k is a bit steep for a rebuilt title though.

I owned two w8 passats and loved them (his and hers). I had a remus exhaust on mine and it sounded SO good. After mine was hit and in the shop for more than a month waiting on parts I got spooked about post warranty service costs and parts availability. So we sold both of them shortly after their warranties expired.

Or you could learn to shop on line, and get OEM bulbs for less than $100 for the PAIR
