Thread: TDI vs TD

  1. 04-23-2012 11:14 AM #1
So it has recently come to my attention that the car I'm looking to buy actually has the TD engine...not the TDI.
From what I understand, they are pretty different engines, with the TD being a whole hell of a lot less desirable. I'm disappointed to say the least, but I'm probably still going to buy it.
I was prepared to replace the head seal on injection pump because it was leaking and was about to order everything from dieselgeek, but I don't know if those parts will work with it now that I know it is a TD, not a TDI.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks guys.

Personally...and everyone has their own preference for various reasons......if you want fuel mileage, reliability, you want the 1.6 TD. Much less to go wrong, parts are readily available, easy to work on. Pumps are expensive on all diesels. Best pump? Call Giles.....look onlin eunder Giles injection pump.

If you want more horsepower, then you want the TDI engine.

Neither one is a bad option.....

The simplest, most reliable and most fuel efficient that was imported in the US is the 1.6na, not the TD.

The only thing about the TD vs TDi discussion is....what model of VW are you talking about? And yes, the TDi is a joy to drive so if you really want a TDi you should hold out for one.

Oh, so its a 1.6l not a 1.9l? That would explain my difficulty in finding parts (googling 1.9l TD).
So the options in '97 were a 1.9L TDI and a 1.6L TD? I'm in Canada, if that makes a difference.

    EDIT:
    It's a 1997 Jetta GL, in Canada.

    EDIT2:
Do you think this seal for the head:
    http://www.dieselgeek.com/Viton_Pump.../pmp-viton.htm
designed for a TDI would work on the TD? The pump, from what I can see, is looking VERY similar...

No, you were right, a 97 Jetta with an IDI engine is a 1.9L, code AAZ. In the US he 97 Jetta diesel was a Tdi code AHU.

The 1.6L TD ended with the Mk2 series for North American markets.

The AAZ suffered some problems, particularly with the crankshaft timing sprocket, which when failed did a lot of damage. Make sure you're not buying one of those. I don't know if VW ever officially acknowledged or resolved that problem.

If you're not at all familiar with diesel engines you might be better off finding a Tdi, or boning up pretty quick on VW diesel stuff. The Mk3 Bentley manual covers both the AAZ and the AHU engines...and there are a lot of differences. The AAZ is more akin to the 1V/MF/ME (old tech) than it is to the AHU tdi (new tech).

The pump distributor head seal kit you linked will work if that's where it's leaking. Alternatively you could buy a Bosch DGK-126 kit that will contain all of the seals you need for the whole pump and follow this guide, it's pretty good:

    good luck

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it.

I remember finding that guide back when I first started looking into this car then turned away from it when i "realized" it was a TDI, not a TD

I think I will do the whole pump; it doesn't look that hard to me.

How would I know about the timing sprocket? I know some damage was done to the head and it had to be replaced, but I was told that would due to an overtorquing of the head. I don't think those would be related at all...

    EDIT: http://www.dieselgeek.com/TDI_Inject...mp-fullkit.htm
Would that kit have the necessary seals to do the TD pump? I'm assuming yes, but maybe not.

the kit you linked suggests it's for tdi pumps, which are different in some ways. I'm sure they carry a kit for the mechanical pumps, which is what the TD you talk about has.

They don't, but I don't think I have any issues with the rest of the pump anyway, so I'm not too worried about it.
