Thread: Black tag with 7-digit code: what is it?

  1. 04-23-2012 01:02 PM #1
When I purchased my used 2003 Jetta, one of the things that I received was a black plastic tag that has some codes on it. On one side is white lettering, 7 digits, first is a letter and the rest are numbers. On the other side is a white tag with black numbers. Two digits are on top, 5 digits are below. This code bears no resemblance to the code on the other side.

I assumed that this could be an SKC, but from what I read in the Ross-Tech info, the 7-digit codes came from dealers and date and dealer number are needed for them to be useful. They refer to a 17-digit code, but clearly this is not it. There are also 4-digit codes mentioned, but that doesn't fit either.

Can anyone clue me in on what these codes are for?

    Could you post a picture?

Where did you find the code, was it in the owner's manual?

My MK4 Jetta came with a sticker that is white with black lettering and it outlines the engine and trans codes as well as the radio code. It was put inside the owner's manual.

In another forum someone pointed this out to me:

What I have is the top tag (VIN 11-17) and the key number on the left of the middle tag. I don't have the other two labels.

    Mystery solved!

Older cars used to use a tag like that for the key code. I thought newer cars used a VIN based code, but maybe not.
