....It's more of a technological collision.....

No...I didn't crash my Jetta....but I was working on my GLI restoration today and when I turned the ignition on...I heard one of the best sounds a VW owner can hear....that 3 toned door chime that many hapless Canadian Tire/Jiffy Lube mechanics believe is the German national anthem...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYX5RqvxEPM

I know some people hate that chime...but it's something that I remember as a kid about my parent's MkII Jetta. In any case, I was thinking....how hard would it be to integrate into my new Jetta?

Looking at the relay that produces said noise, the pins are pretty standard - although I can't for the life of me remember what 85, 86, 15, G and L are for

    31 - Ground
    85 -
    G -
    15 -
    L -
    86 -

The logic in the MkII was that this little relay controlled would turn on the seat belt light on the instrument panel and play the chime for about 3 or 4 seconds when the car was started...then as long as the key was in the ignition and the driver's door was open, the chime would play.

Any of the electrical gurus in this forum who can break down how I would wire this into my MkV as well as the ID of the remaining pins will get their choice of A) a $10 Tim Horton's Gift card or B) a $10 Starbucks Gift-card or 3) a $10 LCBO gift-card.

If we were back in the pre-9/11 aviation world, I'd offer a jump-seat ride in the cockpit of the A330...but since it's 2012....I'm going to appeal to the caffeine addiction I'm sure the majority of this forum has.

    Cheers;

    J.

One other interesting sidebar....Bosch/Hella/VDO make a lot of the avionics in Airbus aircraft...I was recently present for a teardown of an A320 flight deck and was amazed at how much of the wiring is similar in design to what VW uses....Airbus has a version of the CAN Data Bus that is used for the on-board diagnostics system. In addition, many of the flight deck systems use the same numbering system that VW and most other manufacturers use for relay pin identification.

Just some useless aviation blathering from your friendly local Airbus Driver.

For the person that asked about the LCBO....in Ontario, we don't have convenience stores that sell liquor like you do in the U.S....instead, we have the LCBO which stands for "Liquor Control Board of Ontario".

    From Wikipedia:

The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) is a provincial Crown corporation in Ontario, Canada established in 1927 by Lieutenant Governor William Donald Ross, on the advice of his Premier, Howard Ferguson, to sell liquor, wine, and beer through a chain of retail stores. Such sales had been banned outright in 1916; thus, the creation of the LCBO marked an easing of the province's temperance regime (see Prohibition in Canada).
LCBO stores are generally the only stores allowed to sell distilled spirits in Ontario. Currently, the LCBO is one of the world's largest single purchasers of beverage alcohol products.[4] Beer is also sold by the Brewers Retail Inc., which operates using the name The Beer Store, and is owned by Molson Coors, Anheuser–Busch InBev and Sapporo Brewery. Wine can also be found in a number of stores operated by wineries and licensed to sell their own brands. However, the LCBO is by far the largest wine retailer in the province.
