i'd recommend going to your dmv

you want to make sure there's no lien, or if there is one, to pay the right person/lien-holder

if you have to ask this then you are probably over your head. a lien is a legal claim or hold on a piece of property. an example of this is as follows, joe buy a car from smith vw, but joe doesn't have enough money for the car so he gets a loan from vwoa who pays smith vw for the difference that joe couldn't come up with. until joe pays off the loan the lien on the car will not be satisfied, so joe wont be the actual owner until that happens. once it does like magic the bank releases the title and it arrives at joe mailbox. a trip to the registry should clear things up but the registered owner needs to do this. if there are no liens then the registry can send out a new title for a small fee.

all and all this process can be a pain in the ass. i moved a couple times and paper work didn't follow my car properly so when i did try to sell my car i realized that the piece of paper i had was not real and that the state of fl wouldn't release the title until i provided them with paper work saying my loan was satisfied. it cost me about 3 weeks and $200.
