The machine shop I sent the head to told me that the head was already rebuilt and decked before from what they could see...I am getting the pinging noise and I believe I have an exhaust leak at the manifold. Will getting an adjustable cam gear help my case if I can retard or advance it by a few degrees? The leak wouldn't affect the pinging at all, correct? Also, where would be my best bet for a good cam gear that isn't too high priced, I'm not looking for performance, just something to stop the pinging!! thanks in advance!

I'm sorry if there's a thread that talks about this, if there is I can't seem to find one that talks exactly about this type of situation.

First off, how did your machine shop determine your head was already 'decked'? Did they CC the combustion chambers and compare those numbers to a stock head? If it was just 'resurfaced', then that is generally only .002"-.004" of material removed and will have close to zero effect on your compression ratio. Did the machine shop remove more material from the head? If so, how much?

Second, are you sure you used the correct exhaust gasket on the rebuild? Are all the manifold nuts tight?

Lastly, advancing/retarding effects your cam timing, not your ignition timing. So no, an adjustable cam gear is going to do nothing. Your ignition timing is self adjusting.

If you want a performance cam gear, get a TT tuning one. Don't buy a all aluminum one, it'll shred the timing belt. TT sells a nice one for about 70 bucks, I think. Maybe 100.
