Door speakers...

i was wanting to buy new door speakers for my b5 passat
and my question is where is a good place to get these speakers from and how do i know which speakers i need and how do i know if ive got the monsoon system or not ?


are these the correct speakers i need ? and do these work on all 4 doors ?

yes that will fit, but why not just go to crutchfield and get a decent set for $100-150 and they give you the proper door adapters. There aren't wiring adapters for aftermarket speakers so you will have to cut the harness off the door wiring.

crutchfield is the easiest place, but really it's all about finding which speakers you want and then looking for the best prices out there.

i've got alpine type-s componets up front + pioneers in the rear, all 6.5'.

bought them used from other members and bought 2 pairs of spacers made by scosche from best buy online. search for SAVW6 on the best buy website, you won't find them in their stores. i think they are $9 per pair, so expect to spend about $20 for all 4 doors... cheaper than ordering directly from scosche's site.

unless you're having to add crossovers, the actual wiring of the speakers is straight forward. you shouldn't need any special wire kits or adapters for the speakers (other than the door spacers). if you're doing an aftermarket headunit, then crutchfield is a big help.

As long as you don't have Monsoon (external amplifier in the trunk). The Monsoon system is bi-amped, with a separate amplifier for each woofer and tweeter. Also, the amp is calibrated for the particular speakers; it may not have the proper response for aftermarket speakers. In that case, you should replace the amp AND all the speakers.

With the standard system, you should be able to replace just the defective driver, if you pick one that's close to the response of the original one. (Still best to replace them all). Unless you're looking to spend money on an upgrade, just replace the single bad one with OEM.

or should i just buy used speakers from ebay does it make a difference in sound wise if its new or used ?

and are the back speakers the same exact ones as the front door speakers ?

Yes they are the same for the front and back doors. Just so you know actually installing them requires drilling out rivets since VW didnt use screws when they built our cars. Its a relativly straight forward job though. I did it over the course of 2 days an hour or so each night when i first inherited the car from my dad. Crutchfield is definitly the way to go if you are a begineer it comes with a guide and everything.

As for finding OEM speakers your best bet is probably a junkyard, again though mounting them might be a pita with the rivets.

i only got about 3 speakers that are bad both the 2 speakers in the front and 1 in the back that needs to be replaced

Note again that with the Monsoon system, things are different. Not only are the speakers subtly different from the standard ones, the rear woofers are different from the fronts - 2 ohms as opposed to 4. VW does this to increase the rear-woofer output, as sort of a "subwoofer effect".

So, if buying used, you have to match the part number exactly for the best results. It's almost impossible to tell by just looking at the speaker.

Unless you've managed to piss off your local VW dealer, you can give their parts guy your VIN number, and he can give you the part numbers you need. There are also places (ahem) on the internet where you can find copies of the VW ETKA parts list and look it up yourself.

For example, a rear woofer for a Monsoon equipped car would be part 1C0 035 411 E.

Interesting choice. With those Polks, you'd be replacing a woofer with a two-way, full range speaker. Presumably, you could wire it up so either the tweeter in the door, in the Polk, or both are active. So, you'd be either modifying the speaker to disable the tweeter, firing your high frequencies at your ankles, or really screwing up your stereo image and frequency response.

Much better to find an actual woofer that fits there, or just replace like-for-like OEM as I said.

got a question, ok before i changed my factory head unit to the aftermarkt one i have now it would show "Monsoon" on the screen when you would first start up the car, is that an indicator of you having the monsoon sound system because i've checked in the trunk and there is no amp but there is a connector that is supposed to connect to something but idk what because it was like that when i got the car last september. can someone post pictures of what the amp is supposed to look like while in the car

Yes the speakers are full range but im not sure the "woofers" in the door are being fed low end only. You hook them straight up and the tweets in them will be given whatever in coming down the pipe. The factory stuff is crap regardless and they are better off as paperweights. When I get them in ill let you know how they sound.

I just looked at the the ebay pics and noticed the factory speakers look to have a built in crossover so its getting fullrange anyways so just jump the connection and your good to go. AND the tweeters can be directed.
Oh and you will have NEW speakers instead of USED speakers. You'll be spending maybe $20 more for them.
