Thread: My 1997 Jetta: Build(kinda) Thread

Getting an injection pump from Giles. Not built by him...it's a long story. Should be a good pump regardless.
Exhaust after the pump install and timing belt/tensioner change, then a refresh of the shift linkage and she'll be on the road!

there are slight variation difference between the AAZ pump and an m-TDI pump. AFAIK the 96-97 turbo diesels had the m-TDI pumps which are multi pulse, similar to what the tdi's are currently.

However, whatever it's worth, getting a pump from Giles will be phenomenal!

Why, yes, yes it is! Nice car man. Yours is a hell of a lot cleaner than mine

Yeah, I'm looking forward to running the car with the new pump on. Hopefully it makes it a little less sluggish.

Got my "new" pump today. Sorry for the crappy picture, i just don't want to take it out of the package before I install it. That will hopefully be within a few days, when my timing belt and tools arrive.

Today was a good day, Vortex. Got the car standing on its own since almost a month ago. Adjusted the coilovers, washed the exterior and engine bay and cleaned the interior. Looks pretty darn good, considering.
I may crank up the rear just a little...but I think it's pretty good right now. I'll get better pics in day light tomorrow.
I also rebuilt my shift linkage. Shifts like butter now (at least while parked). Solved my problem with getting into first--I'm incredibly happy about that.
Anyways, here are the pictures! Thanks for looking everyone.

Need spacers, not sure when I'll get 'em.

I can't wait to actually drive it again...it's been so long. I hope the pump install doesn't give me any grief.

Well, I guess I kind of found that.
Any way to tell which transmission is which?

Hopefully I'll hear this run again for the first time in months later today!
Changing my timing belt and injection pump today. Any tips or tricks for this? Seems relatively straight forward, from reading my Haynes manual, but I've never done a timing belt before so well see.
    Thanks for reading everyone!

    Thanks for the interest
So I didn't get it running. BUT, timing belt/ auxiliary belts are changed, new pump is installed. It wouldn't fire though.
Fuel to all the injectors, so I know my pump is good. Engine didn't make any bad sounds while cranking, so I know the cam to crank timing is good.
Just gotta mess around with the injection pump timing. I'm not confident we were actually at TDC when timing it after looking at the marks on the flywheel a little closet after we finished.
Had to call it for the night though as I work in the morning.

It got SO close to firing, i was so happy for a second. So the timing must not be too far off...
Purchased my cat back exhaust too. All purchases have officially been made. Should be a matter of 1-2 weeks now

It lives!! My dad adjusted the pump timing while I was at work this morning and she fired up! Smoked for a while, but it settled down.
Putting the exhaust on on Tuesday and then taking it to get safetied and etested.
Cannot wait to just start enjoying this

It's not going any lower for now. Maybe when I get new boots after winter.

Appointments are set up for the safety, etest and alignment tomorrow
Might actually be able to drive this on Wednesday!

  23. 06-26-2012 06:12 PM #58
    And it's on the road!
I think the shop tore my CV boot but I didn't feel like getting into it with them. Having it replaced elsewhere tomorrow. Only 120 bucks parts and labour.
I have a bit of an issue shifting even after my bushing replacement. I did not change the parts directly below the shifter so I imagine that is the problem. It...clicks, for lack of a better word and binds kind of when trying to go into 2nd and 4th. If you position the shifter just so, it won't happen, so it's kind of intermittent. Does anyone have any thoughts on how to fix that? :s

Also, I can't tighten my front suspension mounts down all the way. The part on top is too long and hits the mount that is on the strut. If that doesn't make sense, I'll get a picture. Did I do something wrong in my suspension install? :s

Also after seeing the car on a hoist, I realized I have a TON of rust. This is now my winter beater that I just don't give half a poo about. Ill drive it til it falls apart and if my engine is still going strong, like it is now, I'll swap it into a cleaner shell.

  24. 06-28-2012 06:26 PM #59
Cv boot is fixed, I forgot to bolt the plate down on top of the shifter, and the struts are supposed to be like that.
Now my only problem is rust, and honestly, I don't care. I'm not gonna get into the restos like Juggy and Bariman. For me, it just isn't worth it. I'll find a clean shell sometime soon and swap my stuff over
I am going to be replacing my front fenders and my doors from a junker soon though. Maybe this weekend?

  25. 07-01-2012 02:32 PM #60
Polished the Jetta up yesterday! Today I was going to smoke my turns and dummies...instead I melted them. 350 is TOO HOT for trying to get the glue to soften up I'll have some new ones here soon...probably going to try to smoke them too...hopefully I don't mess them up.
I think I'm gonna Joey mod my headlights as well and do some light night shading on the orange of the tails.

    Anyways, check it out

Fixed my speedometer issues today, I think. Just reflowed the four main solder joints on the speedometer and I haven't encountered any issues yet.
I also removed the green filter from the gauge lights:

One of the lights is definitely out, but I can still see everything clearly. I'm not going to worry about it since I plan on getting some whiter lights to go in there anyway. I like looking at the gauges a lot more now that they a) work and b) aren't that green colour. I'll have to figure out a way to change the odo and clock display colour as well sometime.

Next on the agenda is fixing my AC...not really sure where to start. I bought a standard 30A relay because mine was missing and the light comes on when I press the button now...but I'm still not getting cold air and I don't think I'm hearing anything turn on when I press the button. Where should I start to look for issues?

  28. 08-05-2012 09:03 PM #63
Bought some GLX tails and tinted my side markets and turns/dummies. I LOVE how everything turned out.
    I'll get daytime pictures tomorrow
Aaaand I had to buy a new cluster.
    And I've installed a 1.6 boost pin.
I think that's all I've done recently. Looking for seats now

Also want some smoked ecodes. I'd even like some Joey modded ones...having a real time getting my apart.

Wish I didn't have to run a front plate...might take it off and see how long I can go without getting ticketed.

Getting there! With the front plate move it to the side under the fogs it's a nice place a lot better then the middle!

Yup! That's where I'll put it in the event that I get pulled over with it off.

Mounted the license plate down lower. Looks okay to me.
Gonna paint my door handles today. They currently look like this:

Finally got a chance to put my car beside a stock mk3. I like mine.

What do you guys think of painting the steelies silver?

  34. 08-28-2012 10:36 PM #69
    Painted the steelies!
Looks clean in my opinion. Got a few nasty runs, but whatever. Cars covered in rust

  35. 09-08-2012 05:25 PM #70
New wheels mounted today! They look pretty good I think.
Now I need more low and spacers for the rear.

Front fenders, hood and passenger door are going to be replaced very soon. Either going to be a complete mismatch of colours or all porcelain blue. I will paint them over thanksgiving break most likely...or maybe bring them to someone. How much do you think it would cost to have just those panels done?

I think the car has come a long way. I still have tons of rust repair to deal with, but I think it's finally starting to take shape. Plus the engine is running pretty well now, aside from some leaking injectors...I'll replace them soon too.
