Thread: Utah: New Member checking in

  1. 04-25-2012 06:38 PM #1
    Hey all
So i just bought a 2001 Audi s4 over the weekend. I am pretty new to euro cars so i'm excited to get something new to work on and learn about. My previous car as my name implies was a fd mazda rx7. had it for 9 years before i decided it was time to switch over to something a little more reliable and nice (yeah going to an s4 for reliability speaks volumes about my rx7 lol) Anyways i just wanted to check in here with you guys, get to know some peeps in the local north utah area etc. I am sure you'll be hearing from me more and seeing me around from time to time as well as i am already in love with this car and finding myself and enthusiast for it. Anyways to the good stuff. some history on the car

It's a 2001 Audi s4 b5. Nogaro blue. The body has 225,000 miles on it but the engine, tranny, and turbos were recently replaced and have about 40k on them. I got it for a great deal considering the condition of the car. It has been a Vegas and st george car its whole life so no rust or anything. Other than the common failing lcd in the cluster and a couple of stuck buttons the interior and body are near immaculate. I'll post some pics of it after this post

p.s.- after only a day of owning it the notorious po421 and po431 (post precat o2 sensors) have lit up and so i can't do emissions and register it lol. I've researched and looked at the fouler method for it, but if anyone has a vag com and would wanna help me program those codes out i would prefer that method and there would definitely be a lunch in it for ya

yeah i am pretty stoked to be switching over to the s4. I was gonna get something a lot more simple and easier to mantain but the deal that came up on this one was too good to be true so i couldn't pass it up

fd's are quite possibly one of the least reliable cars in existence. i know at least 3 or 4 people that have had fd's that i've never seen on the road. one friend had put about 100 miles on his in about 3 years because every time he'd get it fixed & drive it, something else would break

anyway, welcome, & you have my dream car, even down to the color

Always awesome to have someone new, be a part of the utah scene.

You wont find a better group of enthusiasts that would be more than willing to give you the shirt off of their backs.

Nice and Welcome, Did the seller provide some paperwork on the work done? Just curious..

  12. 04-26-2012 01:12 PM #12
yeah the rx7 was kind of a headache. The rotary engine itself is rock solid but if you let anything around it fail in the engine bay it'll struggle, particularly cooling aspecys. I rebuilt two engines on mine, one close to stock and one heavily modified and both times something cooling failed which resulted in disaster. If you can spend a ton of money and replace lots of stuff all at once you'll get 75-100k out of them but if you just chase one thing after the other it gets pretty old pretty quick lol.

-also no i don't have the paperwork, but the guy was a pretty honest guy. The engine and trans definitely didn't have 225k on them. I'd eat off this engine honestly and the trans is not sloppy at all. Also from what i understand the ztock k03 turbos on the s4's would never last that long so i feel pretty confident in the details

no upgrading plans really. I am going to keep it stock and as reliable as possible till i am out of school, with maybe just a couple of reliability and cooling mods here and there. After school i may have some fun and go stage 3 with it or something.

I was looking at the same s4 before. How does it drive? Nice choice btw.

  23. 04-27-2012 08:21 PM #24
it drives great! i couldn't get it to pass emissions today and spent seven hours battling with the government about it jumping through hoops. I know there are a couple of lines hooked up wrong that are throwing the check engine light thus preventing me from passing. if anyone has an s4 i could do a side by side comparison to so i can hook them up right i would be very grateful or a vag com to tell the computer to ignore the codes.....

Well OP, welcome to the gang. I'm not in country anymore but this group here is really out to help. There's a lot of people in the sence here that have a wealth of information.
