Should I buy an FR-S?

$1,000 gets me the #1 spot at a local dealer. They said I can order a stripped out 6-speed for under $25K and won't have to get any accessories. I need a car and can hold off for ~5 weeks until it arrives on June 1.

No kids. No pets. 11 mile commute to work on curvy roads and interstates.

Thoughts?

From it's purpose, to it's promises, to it's real-life reviews, I wouldn't doubt that it can handle your curvy roads and interstates. That fact that you don't have any kids or pets seems to me that a car like this won't be an issue [if I had no kid on the way, I would justify getting one too if I could afford to]. So I say as long as you can deal with it being bare-bones, go for it, also, you can give the haters & lovers here a personal review of the car yourself. If you do get it, I hope you enjoy it [when it comes in].

Inside Line says the FR-S is more fun than the BRZ, more oversteer tuned in from the factory.

They also got a better acceleration time (6.6 vs 7.3)

Sixty miles per hour is reached in 6.6 seconds (6.3 seconds with one foot of rollout like on a drag strip), and the quarter-mile in 14.8 seconds at 93.8 mph. Yes, this result is notably quicker and faster than the BRZ, which did those deeds in 7.3, 7.0, and 15.3 seconds at 92.1, respectively. What's going on?

The data reveals that the BRZ actually accelerated quicker initially, but at 19 mph the Subaru laid over a bit and the Scion powered ahead and never looked back. The explanation is equal parts launch technique and gearchange speed. The Scion's tire-spinning launch allowed it power through the 4000-rpm torque hole we observed in our dyno testing where the Subaru bogged down briefly. Plus, our BRZ tester was plagued with a finicky 1-2 gearchange which ate up precious time en route to 60 mph.

The suspension calibration of each car reflects the sensibilities of the two manufacturers: Subaru's customers are accustomed to AWD cars with a lot of stability, and so the BRZ is tuned accordingly. The FR-S's rear suspension is slightly stiffer for less understeer, while the front has a bit less spring rate and revised damper valving to improve steering feel. The remaining suspension components — stabilizer bars, bushing durometers, tires — are identical between the two cars.

In our testing the FR-S generated 0.88g on the skid pad and turned out a 67.3-mph slalom performance; results that trail those produced by the BRZ we tested. The reason is balance — the FR-S's slightly more tail-happy character makes the numbers less big.

In all seriousness, though, I would be hestitant about the $1000 fee. If it's worth it to you, and you absolutely NEED a car, then maybe. If it were, I would offer MSRP and balk at any additional fees. But that's just me.

If this car will make you happy, then do it. We all die somtime. My time might be tomorrow, yours might be next year. Who knows. But if this will bring some enjoyment to your everyday life, and you can comfortably afford, then go for it.

That is one of my two reservations. The other is I haven't driven one yet.

I custom-ordered my car without ever having driven one (though I did drive a similar 3-series). I was in no way disappointed.

You can always re-sell the damn thing if you don't like it. These will hold values extremely well while there are still unfulfilled dealer wait lists.

I am sure that it won't be a 1M, but I wouldn't be surprised if slightly used models of these fetch a premium over MSRP for the first 6 months - 1 year that they are produced.

i would wait until you can test drive it and compare it to the other cars that are around the same price. the magazine reviews are great but you might end up preferring something like a gti, mazdaspeed 3 or mustang v6 that have more horsepower and torque.

Loathe VW after owning six. The Speed 3 seems boring. Had a Mustang GT (well, seven).

I either put down a check to hold one or I wait many months until a dealer actually has one in stock to play with.

I am getting one too in August.

I am a Miata guy, but the appeal of the BRZ/ Scion is their. I live in the Tail of the Dragon type roads and I drive them everyday, so I need something that can destroy these roads.

Anyone know how the base seats are going to be?
