My lease came up on my 2008 MKV GTI..Well, after test driving an Audi A5 2.0, the Merc 350 Coupe, the Volvo S60, and the new BMW 328, I decided to get another GTI. I really wanted the Golf R, but missed out because I couldn't make my mind up on a manual after having DSG. I preferred the manual in the A5 and then wanted to order the R, but they are all sold out where I live. I couldn't wait until August for the new A5, and no 2012's optioned the way I wanted available here. The Volvo was fast, but boring as hell, the Merc looked like a Honda, and the BMW was not as fun to drive as previous generation cars. I decided if I am going to stick with a GTI, I might as well load it up - DSG, Leather luxury pkg, 18" Serron wheels, Nav, Kessy, - I also got a smoking deal - 4% over invoice and since I only had 49K on my car, they bought my car for $ over my lease buyout (plus paid for windshield replacement, 4 new tires, and 2 cracked fog lights) I was just wondering, besides not ordering the Golf R when I had the chance, did I make the right decision? I have short commutes in high volume traffic and love a nimble quick car. I still have my CC for longer drives, and love the DSG. Which car would you have chosen?

Not sure exactly what deal you got there, but in terms of GTI vs Golf R and the other cars you mentioned, I would say you made the right choice.

I was really considering the Golf R, but wanted better gas mileage, less up-front cost, and DSG. I had been driving manual for 15 years and loved it, but lets face it: nobody can shift as fast as the DSG. These kind of transmissions are the future of performance driving.

Also - expect biased answers as you are posting in the mk6 forum.

No one is going to tell you you should have bought the merc or Volvo. Golf r vs gti is basically a personal decision.

if only paying less than invoice was an option in Canada! Way less volume and way less in the way of making a deal for close to invoice. In order to get an invoice price in Canada, we have to pay around $40 to get a report from CAR Cost Canada. The invoice price in the US is available for free on numerous websites, and with so many dealers, deals are easy to come by. As for my question, I was just wondering if anyone else drove the cars I did, and saw a reason to choose them over the GTI , especially considering a $10-15K price premium.

    Thanks for the replies!

I agree, good choice. Test drove the same lot when I when on the hunt to replce my POS B7 Audi A4. That Volvo has so damn boring... it was like a mashup of IKEA/Apple Store/Car Company; clean lines, boring interior, no room.

The Merc/BMW, not much fun to drive IMO, plus they would have been at a premium to get the options that I wanted.

The Golf R.. It was nice.. but, I got all the options I wanted, can get Stage I, and still come out ahead with the GTI.

    Good decision my friend.

Why do you need a CC and a GTI? There is not much difference between the two. Not throwing stones. Just asking.

    Huh?

CC is basically a passat. How are they even remotely the same?
    Only similarity is the engine.

GTI still faster, Better handling, hatchback.
CC Slower, Smoother ride, more leg room, less sporty, not as flashy.

    Two completely different cars.

My parents have a CC and I had a GTI. I sometimes would take their car when I was driving with 3 other people. A lot more legroom in the CC.

I dunno, I'd get a used M3 with a stick. Something with a little more pazzang. I am not knocking the GTI. I drive one. It is just not that much better than a CC. I also wouldn't get a DSG. Why oh why?

You made the right decision, expense to car ratio GTI wins. I looked at the GTI, Golf R, A5, TT, C250 Coupe and IS 250 F-Sport and I'm very happy with my choice.

GTI is an excrptional car. Hard to go wrong with it.

The R isnt all that, and the GTI has a lot to offer in comparison.
