APR's intercooler is pricey but one of the best.

If you are just going K04, the oem for the S3 works perfect. Can be had for a little over 500 bucks

Because you can then get an S3 intercooler for <$300. The pipes that come in the kit are ~$100 apiece and since you could just cut one end off each pipe and use it for free seems like the better deal. And that's why I went with it. If you need the stock pipes one day hit up the part-out for the stock pipes ($134, apiece, from the dealer). And if you feel you need more than that, add a Forge twintercooler to the S3 and be done with it.

And crash_over_ride, if you are going to go to 500 hp, don't worry about the intercooler yet. Rebuild with a little beefier rods, and then suspension, and finally brakes. Intercooler is a side note compared to those things with 500 to the wheels.

an intercooler is hardly a side note. they all work together, and I have no idea why anyone would want a twin cooler setup for a true big turbo build.

thats adding a crapload of extra charge piping/area to pressurize... not to mention the s3 intercooler acts like a giant heat sink.... just like the standard OEM.

So an intercooler acting like a heatsink? Odd concept.

One of the best intercoolers is made by APR, so go with that if you want a big (Read:Huge) single unit. But as the OP pointed out, the end result is to be 500 WHP. And granted while all the parts do work together, and a bigger intercooler is warranted for the application, breaking a rod or not being able to stop or turn will negate the positive experience of having that bigger turbo.

Moral of the story: Do it right the first time.

by not buying an freaking intercooler sandwiched next to the radiator.

but whatever... OP, you can pm me if you want my advice.

also, what qualifies APRs as best? because it is an OEM replacement? because there is no bumper trimming?

when trying... and let me reiterate trying, for 500whp, conventional builds and OEM placement parts, especially the intercooler, will not cut it.

APR makes a solid piece, but there are MUCH better solutions for 'big boy power'

OP, Listen to mrbikle if you're going for 500 whp you're going to want a true fmic and a good one at that. Check out BSH or CTS and be done with it.

OP......listen to mrbikle... I follow what he and another guy name Conglamerate say very closely, they know their ****. Check out Golfmkv.com. A true FMIC is what you want...better airflow. You have a lot to learn if you want to go 500HP, so does this ither clown saying not to worry about an IC.

if the OP has to ask which intercooler is the best for 500 hp, odds are he will never see close to that.
    Engineers do it better.

The CTS FMIC kit is the best imo. You get hard piping from the turbo to the throttle body and its in the same price range as every other big name company.
