Thread: TT RS Maintenance and Break-In Thoughts

  1. 04-26-2012 11:54 AM #1
With the TT RS on order, I can now focus on ownership! I enjoy maintaining my vehicles and would like to make sure that I treat this car right while at the same time not spending $ for no reason. Having said that, I don't agree (in general) with the market's movement to 10,000-15,000 mile oil changes. I know its a subject of debate but it just doesn't feel right. What I've done with BMW's is change the oil myself once in between the 15,000 suggested interval. Having said that I've never bought a new one and therefore haven't had the pleasure of completing the break-in process. I know with BMW's M-cars they still require a 1,200 mile fluid change (I think its engine and diff).

Here are my questions and thoughts for current TT RS owners:

    1) Does the manual prescribe a break-in process and what is it?
    2) Is the first maintenance called for at 10K miles?
    3) What is the word on doing a very early oil change for the engine and Haldex system?
    4) How much of a cost at the dealer or DIY would it be to do a complete oil change on the engine and diffs? I've never owned and AWD vehicle and haven't yet studied the design of the Haldex system.

    What do you all think?

Owner's manual suggests keeping revs below 4500rpms for the first 600 miles, I mostly did this. You should always go easy on new brakes/tires/clutches for the first 300 or so.
First service is at 5000 miles and is free on US cars. Includes oil change, tire rotation, and inspections. Next recommended service on your coin is at 15K.
There are already threads on here showing a DIY oil change. Labor intensive as you have to remove two major underbody panels to get to everything, or use a topside extracter pump. YMMV but I think any oil changes under 10K miles at a time are a waste of money.
Recommended first service for the Haldex is at 40K miles, again I think changing it before then would be a waste of time and money.

This thread has screen captures from the TTRS manual regarding the break-in procedure:
