best oil for 16v

Whats the best oil to be running in a high mileage 1.8 pl. Whats everybody on here use in theirs?

I have no idea how many miles I have on mine (well over 200,000) as my speedometer cable quit a long time ago, but I use 20-50 all year round in both my 81 and 03 (277,000).

My reasoning is that with so many miles the tolerances have increased to the point where a thicker oil will not cause issues. I also owned a 1968 bus that I ran the same weight oil in and that was while living in CO where it was even cooler than the east coast.

valvoline or castrol 20W 50 depending on what I can find.

I had mobil 1 10w30 at first, but switched to AMS oil 5w40 european formula afterwards. I have no idea how many miles are on my bottom end

Whats the temperature like year round in your area? Whats the hottest temp and the lowest temp?

Here in md we get a little bit of everything it gets up in the 90s during the summer and the winters can be pretty cold here. I run 0w-40 in my mk5. The previos owner of my mk2 had been putting 10w-40 royal purple in it so i was just curious if that was the best to use

In my opinion, any good name brand oil is sufficient if it is changed routinely along with a quality filter.

I use full synthetic and in the hot summer months I use a 20-50 weight. In colder months I drop down to a 10-40 weight. I use Mann filters on my VW motors.

There are some high mileage synthetics available which I use on my other daily drivers approaching 250,000+ miles on the odometer. Seems to work well.
