Driving fairly conservatively with about 50% city and 50% highway the car returned 50.377 mpg. 667 miles driven with 13.24 gallons required to fill up.

Although I enjoy this car immensely, I imagine some thoughtful suspension tuning here and there...or not.

That's a ridiculous MPG (in a good way). I'm averaging 34 MPG mixed city/highway (mainly city).

    6 speed or DSG?

That's also FAR above what I'm getting in my 2010 TDI. I average around 34 city as well: http://www.fuelly.com/driver/amdisthebest/jetta

    Was the entire trip downhill?

6 spd...I was trying to get good mileage...I think that a lot of city driving might have dropped this mpg number significantly. We bought two Golf TDi for our business and may purchase a couple more. The other fellow got 49.63 mpg from his first tank - 6 spd also.

I rarely venture above 2,500 rpm and follow the up shift indicator unless going up a hill so as not to lug the engine. ...doesn't mean I don't want to rip into this thing...and it feels like it would go like hell for a diesel if pushed.

wow thats awesome. Are you trusting the trip computer or did you actually do the math, lol? Not sure if this is your first TDI (it is for me), so i recommend reading up on the "break in thread" if you haven't already...

I performed the math - 667 miles and 13.24 gallons of fuel.

I am keenly aware of how important engine break-in is. But thank you for the link...I read it and perhaps I should spin the motor just a bit more.

Until now, I was also unaware of the special break-in engine oil...so that is very helpful information! I might have thought I were smarter than VW and changed the oil at 3,000 miles...we learn something new every day.

you are taking it easy enough that you will shorten your turbos life expectancy because of it..

you need to go out and romp on them once in a while, build some heat, burn the carbon out of the turbo and off the vanes, keep them moving freely..

I did just that this past weekend...kept it under 3,800 rpm based upon one of the link above but I did take a very long drive into upstate New York and back - 600 miles - windy and very hilly road. I didn't romp on it but I did drive it fairly aggressively. Hope I did better...I am driving it more and more aggressively, however.

floor it often, when you work the throttle, it works the vanes in the turbo..

DO NOT BE AFRAID TO USE WIDE OPEN THROTTLE once in a while... they put it there for a reason, idk why soo many people are afraid of it..

working the vanes, and burning off the crap inside the turbo is whats happening when you romp on it..

...not afraid, just being careful/methodical during break-in. Second tank I got 42.24 mpg...but I took the opportunity to push the motor a little more...and today even more. I think I have about 1,500 miles on the car in 10 days...yikes!

I've been averaging 40+ with my car, but I've been babying it. Glad to read about some views on break in, so I've been having more fun getting on it to keep the turbo clean. Got about 3000 miles on it and love it.

My first tank seemed to be the best MPG

On my 09 I picked up a used set of gli shocks, h&r sport springs, and gli rear sway bar for under $250. By far the most transforming mod I've done to one of my cars in a long time. It's much more fun to drive.

What is the difference between the TDi and GLi rear bar? And the GLi shocks hold up ok with the sport springs?

    Stock mkv tdi swaybars are

    21mm front
    18mm rear

rear mkv gli bar is 22mm.

I have had 2 mkv gti's and now my tdi with lowering springs and have yet to have a shock blow from it being lowered. It will shorten the life of them but I am not sure by how long. Even if mine blow in 30k miles I can pick up a used set for dirt cheap.

Good info. What's the GTi stock front bar size? I'm guessing 25mm. I'll have to watch the classifieds. Thanks.

You only need to floor your car once every day or two. Thats exactly what I do, and have no vnt sticking issues. You DONT need to floor it all day and every time you drive it etc. But def do it for 2-3 good gear-pulls every 2 days or so. BUT, with you driving a lot of highway, you do NOT need to floor it. Going highway speeds is fast enough to where no carbon will form due to the higher highway egt's.
