Thread: Google Drive - anybody tried it yet?

  1. 04-26-2012 07:22 PM #1
    http://drive.google.com/start

I just completely switched over from Dropbox.

The migration was fairly painless. I got an email stating that my Google Drive was "ready" (the service has been out for a couple of days, many were put on a waiting list), my theory is that they are staggering these so they don't get hammered with tons of new users trying to upload everything at once. I just uninstalled Dropbox (it leaves the files on the computer), installed Google Drive, and dragged everything over. It's still uploading very slowly, but I'd imagine that once everybody is squared away it will be faster.

Anybody else give it a shot yet?

I was going to use it until I found out it is just like Dropbox where the service will only sync files and folders inside the parent synced folder.

Whereas I prefer to be able to choose an existing folder(s) to sync.

I still use Google Drive/Docs for storing files though.

It's pretty cool, that you can share anything.

Google+ lets you store 20,000 songs on their cloud for free.

What didn't you like about Dropbox that prompted you to switch?

Dropbox was fine, I just really preferred having the integration with Google's mail and calendar.

I upgraded +25 gigs as soon as my drive was ready. I like that it adds to your storage with each monetary upgrade. So I have 30gb now. They will do +100 for another 2.50 a month over the 2.50 im paying now if I need 130gb eventually.

I like its integration with android and other google services. I am using it primarily as redundant backup of things and the availability from anything with a browser and tight integration anywhere with my phone are added benefits.

I hope that Drive is a success and further things can get integrated on the android side. I would love to see automatic backup for all system files/settings/user prefs as a checkbox option within android and things like that.

I am a fan of the whole google ecosystem and I hope they really find their place with this service.

    I'd love to try it...

I had USB HDDs for backups. Thieves broke into my place, took my three laptops (2 personal 1 work) and my USB HDDs...

    DAMN!

So well, I don't relly have anything worth doing backups of anymore.

Using it now. I'm going to see if your able to buy a whole years worth of storage upgrade rather then monthly.

How does the google + music thing work. 20,000 songs That is way more then the free 5GB you get with drive right off the bat, so I'm guessing thats separate. How does that work?

Perfect time to have switched from my iPhone to android:thumb up:
Few people understand the psychology of dealing with a highway traffic cop. A normal speeder will panic and immediately pull over to the side. This is wrong. It arouses contempt in the cop heart. Make the bastard chase you. He will follow.

So with google drive, does it also cover your picasa pictures. I would love to use it as a place to store all my pictures.

You just sign into google+, using your gmail credentials, and select PLAY...

It's easy to upload your songs, it's easy to play/stream your songs via PLAY, but I have yet to figure out how to copy all my music down to one of my PC's that doesn't have songs on it.

google+ also hosts your pictures for free, and you can set it up to automatically post on your google+ account, so you can delete them for your memory card, and post them online.
