fx 400 good feel and will hold that all day
#1
Block is done at the machine shop!
Picking it up tomorrow and then assembly begins.
As stated above, I am just looking for some suggestions for a 400-450whp clutch setup?
I'm looking for a very reliable daily driver/some track racing setup. I'd like the pedal feel and drivability to be fairly stock since it's going to be a daily and I don't really want to spend a ton of money.
From what I've dug up, it looks like a south bend stage 4 with possibly the stock flywheel would be a good option?
ALSO, for all of you in this hp range, what kind of torque are you making?
Thanks in advance for your input.![]()

fx300 will hold it and more and feel better than a 400. buddy has one in his 20vBT and it is great.

I have the FX400 and so far I'm not happy. Whether its the clutches fault, the installation, ect I'm still unsure. At this point I'm thinking its a bad slave in regards to my problems (but I won't get into that.) So far I have noticed alot of *clunking* shifts as well as a very non-persistent clutch. As in sometimes it grabs like hell and other times it feels soft as sh!t. This is all when daily driving. Regardless of all that I did notice that when I need to get power to the ground and crack through the gears it does one hell of a job and I guess that's all that matters. As for chattering goes its not bad and tolerable even with BFI stage 2 mounts. For daily driving however I would not suggest the FX400.

i dont see it having a problem holding <500whp, once my buddy gets on the dyno, i can tell you what we know personally so far. but i know another friend making 420ishwhp and drags the car on the fx300

Choosing the right clutch depends on what type of driving you'll be doing. You can't just buy the "right" clutch my reading the hp ratings.
For a street/strip I'd still say invest in a twin disk. They drive great and last 3x longer than any single disk clutch I've owned. Plus they're rebuildable![]()

oh i completely agree.
but i see most people buying monster clutches and flywheels that are too light and then. they say driving the car is a hassle blah blah.
i got my custom SB stg5 because i daily my car and i knew i would be increasing the power quickly over time, etc.
to me, the fx300 is pretty much what most people should be running. dual disc are for racing, not street cars. race cars, the fx400 is someone who is truly going to go out every weekend and race but it is still a street car. cos 99% of guys on here, still aren't pushing over 400/450whp and dont need anything more than an fx400 at most.
that is just my long term data collection from this particular forum(1.8t)

I'm in the same process of findin the right cut h as I smoke my sb stage 2 drag that they say hold 390tq .. I was looking at the fx400 but don't know if it would handle my setup either .. I dd and drag maybe 3/4 times a year .. Clutch master say its good til 400/450 at the flywheel.. I'm over 400 at the wheels

I run a 14lb flywheel and fx400 in my 02j. Made 343whp on the 50trim, haven't dynoed since.
I find combo to be great on the street. Easy clutch feel, excellent drive ability (unless you are a jagaloon and can't drive).
Maybe the 300 is better, I don't know, but IMO the 400 is a good street clutch.

Well I am just @ the 400 mark and with the six speed I kinda bargained out and just picked up a Valeo single mass conversion kit....I had no clue how long it would last but knock on wood it's been in for a year. I have noticed lately it's starting to do some strange things like not release every time....makes for an interesting drive when this happens. I have a new clutch masters set up waiting to go in.
I would say at least a fx400 at minimum depending on driving style should do you just fine.

gulfstream: that car i got your 1000cc file for. 1.8t,worked head, IE cams, gtx3071,etc. is on an fx300 02j.
so it mus thold up, cos he adapted the vvt file, got fueling spot on and then we did some datalogging. the thing is fukn insane dude....

I put down 405 whp and have been using the stock clutch for over 2 years with the same setup. I had an aftermarket clutch that never worked right so I went back to stock. I don't drive the car all that hard but it doesn't ever have a problem when I do. Clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate have somewhere around 30K on them.

Not to threa jack but I'm making this decision right now too.
Billet 3071r, fx300 or fx400?
Would the 300 handle the torque spoke the bullet 3071 will make?

as i have figured out how to use it and decipher some tricks, and getting help from dudes around the world....yeah..i am beginning to like it. i will always keep my uni ecu because it still obliterates everything in it's path..took down two 35r STI's on friday...they had no clue lol.
but it would be easier to get antoher ecu with maestro than to switch back to autronic
gtx3071r has a gnarly torque hit at 4k and the fx300 stands up like it's nothing nad can hold the 400+whp daily no problem for several months now and several thousand miles

one thing every one is missing so far is match a clutch to the tq rating NOT hp ..after all thats how they are rated from the clutch manufactures ... for instance our cars even tho they can make 400+ wheel "HP" will still only make about 330+ tq .... and in some cars say 500+ wheel set ups may still make less than 400 tq .... big turbos make hp smaller turbos gt3071 Al's billet 3071 etc will have a bigger tq spike than lets say a 3082 ,35r or bigger ... hence the reason they are so fun to drive ..
after all Enzo Ferrari said "Horsepower sells cars, torque wins races" lol

hence the term DRAG... not really ment to last
dont do it .. just do a fx300 and call it a day
ive installed a few of them in the 02m as well as a dxd stage 3 daily and i prefer the fx300 for smoother engagement and a lighter pedal pressure vs the dxd aka south bend
