    Thread: Wood rack...why not?

      Got this idea after seeing some older vw buses and beetles with wood racks...and wanted something different. So I came up with this. I used Google Sketch-Up to design it and get an idea for what it would look like. If you are using the Votex base bars...you can use the same model: link to my design

      I used red oak because it seemed the most rigid for the thickness. I wanted it as low profile as possible, so I ground down elevator bolts to slide into base bar channels:

      I deviated a little from my original plans as I went, but the concept and measurements stayed the same. The color didnt quite turn out like I wanted, but still working on that. You get the idea. Anyways, here it is:

      I think it looks great. I plan on using the same type of wood on my caddy

      would look kinda cool with a chrome wire basket to match the trim on the car

      Looks good as is tho

      Got a kid now...so soft luggage that used to go in back seat will ride up there now. Its on and off in about 30 secs...so it wont stay on except when needed.
