Having been working on this project for the last few years, I have thought of many thread titles but decided to keep it straight forward. "VRT MK2 With a Twist" always seemed to fit. But anyways.

I'm scramble brained. I don't have time or money like I used to when I started the project. This thread will include updates of my customer cars, other projects, camping trips, dogs, beer and maybe a debut at Wuste 2012. Something about starting a family really ate into my car hobby time. I plug away on this project as I can, miss deadlines about every time I make a deadline, usually end up creating more problems than solutions because I am set in my ways. I was the head tech at Tomas Sport Tuning for the last 7 years, and recently left there and got a boring job that pays more and has benefits and retirement stuff. Yawn.

Some history - my parents bought me an 89 GTI 16v when I was 16. I went through several changes on that car - 1.8 16v, then 2.0 16v, then ABA16vT, then VR6 (actually a handful of vr6's), and then turbo vr6. I was addicted to power. I was full time at Tomas Sport Tuning, had no living expenses, loved my car. It was easy! Schimmel 3.0L with big valve head. DTA standalone (chip tunes were no good back then). Quaife 6speed trans. Wilwood brakes. Air ride, coilovers, rims here rims there. Resprayed by Bryce Anderson (2deepN2dubs). I did what I wanted with that car. Best dyno number was 575wph. With the gearing and final drive I had, I was able to top the car out at GPS indicated 198mph, later gear calculator confirimed. Melted a piston. Put a junkyard block in there dyno'd 550whp. Did another top speed run - melted cyl 5 exhaust valve and destroyed a few other expensive things. Put junkyard head on with a little bigger cam netted the same power.

So what do you do when you have a 550whp GTI that doesn't get traction until ~110mph, ****s out expensive axles if you put drag radials on, and is all around everything you wanted? you change it. Decide you want AWD. not some sloppy clapped out syncro drivetrain that you already sourced and purchased. You want Quattro.

Enter round 1. I wanted to go fast, nothing else mattered. I bought a 1995 Audi 90 quattro with the intents of putting the quattro running gear into my golf. After adapting my vr6 into the Audi for some testing before I cut my car up, it was time to convert my car to a longitudinal vr6 turbo quattro. I got it on the road about 2 years after I started, with a lot of loose ends to to wrap up. It didn't have a center exhaust/driveshaft tunnel, the 8 point roll bar I built wasn't kid-seat friendly, the dashboard didn't fit with the rollbar, the cooling system didn't have fans, the fuel tank didn't have a proper pickup, etc.

I had a kid along the way and found that I was no longer interested in maintaining 3 modified mk2's and this quattro project had gone off in a direction I didn't like. Compounded with owing the IRS a ton of money from playing games with my taxes, it was time to consolidate my cars. I needed to part the blue mk2 and recoup some money, and put all the go-fast parts onto my now stripped blue shell. I took the tube-front that I built for the black one, and improved everything from there. I am taking on round 2 in several steps. I am getting everything in the front of the car 100% the way I want it, getting the center tunnel done, then converting it to quattro last.

So you start with a PVW cover car

And then you part it out.

And for part three I will get us close to up to date.

First up was to finish what I was overwhelmed by on the black car - the exhaust tunnel.

So my fiance and I went to the junkyard and cut the tunnel out of a b5 a4 quattro.

Then i fit it to the mk2

Learn that with a driveshaft taking up the exhaust tunnel, you need to make a pocket to route the exhaust through

Next, you shave your engine bay

Finally you can start with the exciting stuff! This is all mock-up - nothing welded

Smurf blue spray paint - you can't see this with the car assembled and I have no $$ to pay a pro

New intercooler location and hot side pipe

Modified the oilpan for subframe clearance and better front ground clearance

Ended up breaking the pan first time I drove it

Mounted the Audi steering rack to the firewall

Start doing final assembly. Replaced the engine block while i was in there

    Turbo inlet

Got some cheap wheel adapters from ebay to convert from 4x108 audi to 4x100 VW. just using these to help determine what width hubcentric spaceres to get or possible redrill to get the fitment I want

    My son helping me

    He loves keys

Temporary finished look. Going to redo the intake manifold with throttle body pointed towards the rear

    Together with my fiance's car

Radiator fans and intercooler heat exchanger location

so i will have to dig around for more pictures. Interior is all back together and the front end is all mounted. i have about 200 miles on it. Still have the stock mk2 rear beam in place, just getting all the kinks in the front end sorted out

I dont really think i will have it finished. I might tow it down there. Ive never towed my cars anywhere, always enjoyed driving them. But with a kid and a new job I can't risk issues.

Where can I buy a grille to replace mine, that will accept a metal lower trim piece?

    Dan,
Thank you for your countless hours welding for me. You have really helped me get the car to where it is. Unfortunately, I am unable to offer you another drive. I took the 288 cams out and put stock cams back in. The new found torque stripped all the teeth off of fourth gear. Doh! Once its complete you definitely have some driver's seat time lined up.
    Sincerely,
    K. Antaki
