the same thing happened to my in my 98 gl. i replaced the bushings and changed the fluid and nothing changed. it turned out that a part of my trans that the linkage was mounted to had broken which caused me to loose gears. start with the good ol visual inspection

haha ive had the same happen with a pen... not thinking i popped the hood and started screwing around with the shifter linkage box (not sure the exact name of it)... and i realized the previous owner had ziptied the box in place. well i broke the zip ties and moved it around, and now i cant figure out where the box goes in the engine bay, so i just left it sitting kinda wierd.... my haynes manual doesnt show where to install it... if anyone knows PLEASE let me know.

There are c-clips known to fall off on the shift cable trans bracket. Sounds like this happened to you. The c-clip I'm speaking of holds the outside of the shifter cable (in this case, gear selector cable) to the bracket on top of trans. If this pops out, the pulling motion the cable still works (1st, 3rd, 5th,) but the cable will bow when push pressure is applied for 2nd or 4th. The cable is bowing and has slack without the securing c-clip to that bracket. Look around where this first happened to you, see if the clip is laying on the ground. They can land and stay on top of the trans if you are lucky.

i dont see anywhere where there would be a clip missing, any chance you have a picture

Try adjusting your shift linkage if everything seems complete and intact if that doesn't work you probably damaged your shift tower internals. Happened to me in my Rado and I only had 2nd and 4th.

something like so: http://www.ecstuning.com/Volkswagen-...hifter/ES6769/
