Well finally get some stuff done on my Caddy so I figured what better place to update the progress than on the Vortex. This way I'll be able to document the stages of the truck as they come and go. I consider this "Stage 1" build phase and it will only get better from here. Without further delay some pics....

As always feedback is welcome whether positive or negative.

LOL the trashbags were moving some of my wife's crap to the donation place today. Certainly enough low already on the truck without the bags. Interior shots I can do. I will try and remember tomorrow. Thanks for the kind words.

Seriously... that's a damn nice caddy. Pleassssse remove those tie downs from the bed and fill the holes! It's looking damn clean.

I agree about the tie downs. When it comes time for body work I will be shaving the tie downs as well as the mirrors. Tough to beat a Caddy. I also need to do a roll pan along with the body work and paint.

for sure man... I have been out of mk1s for a few months, no VWs right now, and I do have a mini-truck, but I would still love to build a caddy. Really digging the look of yours.

A roll pan would be perfect (just add something to act as a bumper behind it man!)
Not totally sure about the front bumper, but I have seen a local guy with a beautiful setup, a metal duckbill he built, and tube steel bumpers... little 1" single tube guys, probably more for looks than function. I don't know where my pics of it went.

Took a few interior shots today just to document how clean the interior is...The plan now is to drive it until it breaks!

Also, I have recently been having a weird idle on cold starts with the AWW motor. Anyone had this happen with their 1.8t before? Not sure what is up with it but once the water temp is up slightly it idles normally but right off the bat with a cold start I get this....

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F935I...1&feature=plcp

Any help in diagnosing is much appreciated!

Bump, I disconnected the MAF and it idles the same. Does that mean MAF is not the problem?

For that price you can't beat it! It allows me to play my iPod and that's all I need! Caddy is so noisy on the highway anyway you can't hear the radio.

I can see it being a vacuum leak but why would it stop doing this after it warms up if it were leaking?

Actually thinking about it totally makes sense. As the motor warms up the leaking hose or whatever it may be expands thus sealing properly thus no more idle issues. Now if only I had a lift to get under the car easily and have a look around.

Thanks. I'm about to drop the truck off at Peak Eurosport to see if they can get the truck on a lift and find the vacuum leak. I think I have pretty well diagnosed that it's a leak (cleaned throttle body, adapted throttle body, checked intercooler piping for leaks, cleaned maf, disconnected maf, etc.) and I'm still getting that weird idle when it's cold. This is my first experience with Peak Euro so I will post up how it goes. Luckily they are located a few blocks from me so I can just drop the truck and walk home.

I may have scored a sweet deal on some RS's too! They are 5x114.3 but I will just get some adapters for them. Would really change the look of the truck for the better rather than the full face steelies. Hopefully my offer is accepted!

Does Crawlorado not require mirrors or are you adding an alternative?

CO does require mirrors but when this thing goes under the knife for paint and body work it won't be doing daily duty anymore. It will change to garage queen/show status so the mirrors won't be necessary.

Update truck is done at Peak Euro and they corrected a few issues. Apparently it was the MAF as well as the Bypass valve. I also had a vacuum leak on the rear of the block that a steam test revealed. Will be picking up the truck a little later this evening and will update with another idle video.

Thanks dudes. The truck runs MUCH better now. I am still having a little bit of idle bouncing around on cold starts but settles down within about 20 seconds. The car holds boots better and overall is much better to drive. It will be going back to daily status now.

Thanks amigos. Looks like the RSs are going to have to wait until I sell one of my guns. Anyone want to buy a sick Smith and Wesson 1911? Only 20 rounds through it!

Well I took the truck for a long mountain drive yesterday and it ran great. Still acting grumpy on cold startups. Not sure what it is going on with that. The diverter valve was definitely shot though because now I don't get any surge. It sounds lovely. Now, I decided that the black wheel look was done so I started stripping the paint off, low and behold I have a nice polished steelie under there. I thought they were generic steelies but I am happy to see that these are polished. I'm sure someone will trade me some old school RA's or something for them...at least I'm hoping so.

Update! Got all of the wheels stripped and they look SICK. The truck looks so much cleaner with the polished look on the steelies. I may just rock these for a while as they have great fitment and don't rub too much. What do you think?

Dudes need some help. Driving the truck today and running strong as usual...then I start getting the shakies at around 30mph. Anything slower than 20 and nothing but getting over that speed it's nuts. I assumed I was having wheel bearing issues CV joint is toastada. I layed down to see what I could find but couldn't find anything glaring. I have had experience with shaking due to losing a wheel weight but this felt more vigorous. Perhaps it's worse because I'm running camber or something? Maybe I'm just being paranoid. Ideas before I can get the truck on jack stands to check it out?

Good luck with that shaking issue. Truck looks good, steelies were nice black or polished. What size are they, what were they from originally? That 20v must pull nicely.
