Why do you want to use 0w40? You CAN, but I'd stick to what is asked for unless you have a reason not to.

I recently purchased a 2004 Passat V6. I was wondering if I can use 0w40 instead of 5w40?

It depends on the oil. You're looking for VW specification 502.00 on the label. For most oils, it's going to be 5w40. For a few, like Mobil 1, it may be 0w40.

the v6 isn't quite so picky on oil as the 1.8t... you can use 0-30, 5-30, 0-40, or 5-40.
i wouldn't mix n' match weights, but if you're doing an oil change, then any of those (502 spec or not) won't give you issues. just make sure it's full synthetic.
personally, I use the 502 spec 5w-40 full synthetic. since our cars are prone to pcv leaks, i prefer the heavier weight to help possibly slow down any seepage through the various gaskets.
i know of guys that have even switched to conventional oil without issue, it's just not recommended by VW.

You should be able to run 0w40 without issue as the 0 refers to cold starts, while 40 is the operating viscosity/weight. Since M1 0w40 has been known to shear down a bit fairly quickly, I'd probably stick with 5w40, but that's my opinion. As long as you keep a watch out for oil consumption/leakage, you will probably be fine.

Thanks for the input. I am just going to stick with the fully synthetic 5w40 I have been using.
