Thread: Coilover options for GLI. What's good?

  1. 04-28-2012 11:16 PM #1
Looking to make some changes to my new stock GLI and I think I'm going to avoid any exhaust/intake/ecu upgrades til next summer. I'm looking to tint windows and laminex my tails and such. My first major upgrade will be the suspension. I am pretty satisfied with the Bathurst(sp) wheels that came with the autobahn edition, but think id like to lower the car a little. I've looked at a few websites for options but I don't really know what I am looking for. Ecs has the FK automotive kit that looks nice, but I really don't have the knowledge to make an intelligent choice.

What are a few setups that are available? I don't mind spending a little more to get some quality parts. I don't plan on going too low as I live in a very hilly and poorly maintained city, and the end of my driveway is also a bit unfargiving at the entry.

Im pretty sure coil overs will offer me the best ride. I certainly don't want my ride quality to be less comfortable than stock. It would be nice if I cold improve upon it.

TLDR: recommend me some solid suspension options for a medium drop and a solid comfort level. Prefer to avoid the lower tier options, willing to spend a little more for quality.

I just recently got my ST coilovers installed. Comfortable ride even when all the way down. Sounds like you wont have your coils all the way down, but im sure the ride is still nice when they are raised up a little bit. I recommend you get them. Good quality for $800.

If you want a stock ride, stay on stock suspension.
Some coils ride better than others, but...despite what anyone will try to tell you, no coilover setup will ride 'like stock.'

But, for the best balance between a sportier/stiffer setup with adjustable dampening, I'd recommend Koni's. Most any coilover with a progressive spring will provide a decent enough ride, as long as you don't lower them beyond the shocks workable range.

The setups mentioned to this point are solid options. The traditional top tier suspension options are Bilstein or H&R. They're more money, but worth it.

So you have some good and great options available to you. What might decide it for you is getting a ride in someones car that has these setups. You'll know which one to get because you'll feel the ride you like immediately.
