I have a 98 golf GTI and it had a starting problem until i replaced the ignition switch. Before I did that, the CEL was throwing the fuel pump relay code. after replacing the switch, the pump and relay turn on and off constantly. Any ideas?

Good news: you know this is an electrical problem if its throwing a CEL. Personally I would try the relay first. Those little buggers can be pretty tempermental and lots of things can make them go bad. Heat, vibration, Electrical shorts...I'd try and find out if the relay was good first. Start with the easy stuff. If the relay is good then this could just as easily be the pump.

Bad news: If both the pump and the relay are good then your going to have to hunt down the gremlin thats causing the relay to switch on and off. This could be a short in the harness...

Check the power and ground on the relay control circuit. If they're steady, the relay is bad. Relatively common failure.
