When I installed my Airlift kit last weekend we used the teflon paste on the front bags only, but had a friend pick up teflon tape on his way over that we used for every other fitting. Once we turned the system on the front leaked like the Titanic. Had to take the front back apart to undo the fitting into the bag, get rid of the paste, and replace with tape. Haven't had a single leak since.
I would never try driving around before airing up and letting it sit for a while with the engine off to make sure the system doesn't leak at all.
I probably wouldn't recommend trying to patch the bag and drive anywhere... That sounds like a good way to blow it out while driving and wreck your car.
