Thread: Need help: Automatic vs. Manual

  1. 04-29-2012 01:16 PM #1
I'm thinking of buying a 2012 autobahn gti. Between automatic and manual, which do you think will have better resale value in the future?

I would imagine that DSG would have a higher resale value, since it is technically a pricey option, and the average person would prefer an automatic or DSG over MT. Also, private buyers of an MT car might have some worries like clutch life, synchro damage, etc. from however the previous owner drove it.

But MT is more fun/engaging and is the true way to drive a car.

If its strictly about resale, you would be better off with DSG.

But for fun factor, and cheaper ownership, 6 speed manual. (DSG service $250-500 per/40k miles)

I went with a stick, since this is a fun sporty car.......Auto IMO is better for luxury cars/pickup trucks/SUVs.

I would agree that dsg has better resale value in the future. Nobody knows how to drive stick anymore.

However not thing beats the tactile feedback and man machine connection of a manual. They're far more engaging and fun to drive, and I wouldnt trade it for anything.

I would say do what you want, and not worry about what other people in the future think about it

You need to consider how long you plan to keep the car.

The DSG needs an expensive (~$400) service every 40K miles (unless you can DIY). That increases the cost of your car, and could decrease the resale value if you sell it shortly before the service is due.

its really easy to DIY the dsg service, and only costs 90 dollars roughly and about 4 hours of your time to do it.

realistically, i'd go with 6MT cause its more fun...but to each their own.

My dealer charges $250. How did you come out with $400??

Two VW dealers locally here...one is 229 and other is over 500! DSG service seems to be higher cali and NYC. Luckily I found my dealer is 229 for TDI DSG we own. and its every 40k in addition to the normal 40k service.

on the other hand a manual i dont think gets any attention until 75K and is only 59 bucks or so.

fluid/filter change....its a costly fluid(90+bucks) and labour is timely. Special tools.

Many have made or bought the tools and do it themselves...but for the most part the avrg owners have this service done at dealer.

I'm not sure it's worth spending $1100 now to increase resale value by $300-$500 in the future. Buy the one you like.

I got a dsg as opposed to the 6mt in my mkv, I sometimes regret it, but dsg is pretty sweet.

DSG or manual. It's all a personal preference. I like the DSG since its simple and hard to mess up driving it. BUT, there is something purely gratifying about shifting your own gears.

    I own a 6mt. Don't regret it one bit. Plus it's a theft deterrent. X-p

6MT. There is no question. It is cheaper to begin with and a piece of cake to sell used. A properly maintained used GTI with manual transmission practically sells itself. There is huge demand for these vehicles used and in good condition.

Seriously I don't think resale is an issue. You may get a little more for DSG but it cost more to begin with. And there will always be a number of buyers that will only drive manual (like me)

Same with me, almost exact scenario. Love the dsg and the fast shifts. The throttle blip sounds at full throttle are a added bonus.
