So I put a deposit on an R at the local dealer so when it came in I'd have first choice on the car. Well they called me today and I went and checked it out. It's a white, base 2dr which is what I was looking for...HOWEVER the dealership is asking get this.....41,000 for a BASE 2dr... Originally I was informed the vehicle would be 35k when it came in as equipped. Well I talked to the manager to work a deal with them and as of now they won't budge on the price.

Should I keep trying to negotiate it with them or say screw it and start looking elsewhere?
I spent a good three hurs at the dealer today trying to work out a price and the only thing they gave in was free extended warranty...

I would laugh at them and walk away. I paid Msrp for my 2dr loaded.

Wow. I've been driving around in my car for 3 months... I feel slightly dirty for having paid "full MSRP" for it but at least I didn't pay over MSRP, and there were no absurd fees to go along with it.

Just tell them that you would happily make an offer of $33,230 + $770 destination = $34,000 today. I feel like thats a fair price. And to give you a call when they're willing to sell it for that.

San Clemente. Beautiful place. Love Dana Point. Markup? No surprise there!

I had to double check the date to make sure this was current ! I paid $448 under msrp at Darcars in MD for a white 4 dr loaded. A plane ticket out of state would be worth the savings.

Walk away and keep looking. That is crazy. Sticker was $36,260 on mine and I paid $34,510. That's close to invoice. The car was 3 hours away so I bought a $40 bus ticket and went and picked it up and drove it back. Prices are coming down and they will continue to drop closer to invoice. My local dealer is selling one here for close to invoice as well.

Inform them that the car is not as "exclusive" as they may think it is, and that you could always just get a 2013...

But at this stage...I would tell them to **** off and look elsewhere. A dealer like that doesn't deserve your business.

Don't consider giving that dealership business. These cars aren't as "unavailable" as you may think. While you can't get as good a price as other cars because of the limited production, there are dealerships that will work with you. I was able to get just around $1100 off MSRP. I didn't have to do the "I'm walking away" and maybe I could have done a bit better. That being said, I first went to cars.com, found some potential Rs, called the dealerships to find out if they were still available. Only 1 dealership around me was charging over MSRP, and it did the same thing when the 2004 R32 came out. If you don't find any fairly close by, consider a 2013. Make sure before ordering that you are getting the same price if you were to buy a 2012. I ordered a 2013 but paid the 2012 price. They aren't changing between model years.

It was fladeboe vw in irvine. I told them to give me my deposit back and that they lost a sale unless they can bring the price down to 33k plus closing costs and what not.
But my hopes are not up on this

Go out into the woods, find yourself a nice thick rough branch, and shove it up the sales managers ass. It sounds like that's what he's trying to do to customers anyway..

I dont know how badly you want it, but id say just try to get them back to sticker. In your neck of the woods i think that is the usual. 33k may not happen even if they were a reasonable dealer.

    just my .02.

Let me run a search and see if anyone else is showing a similar car in stock. i dont see them going from 6k over sticker to 2k under sticker for you. maybe better luck with a different dealer. id white only color you would take?

I have no new input for this thread.
However, I cannot help but want to post something regarding the issue...

Hmm, maybe you could let them know that the entire VWVortex board (one that had a lot to do with this car actually being sold within their dealership) is laughing at their entire managerial crew. Ensure them of the horrible PR they are receiving right now.

As a completely removed third party, I'd like to personally thank you for offering to build a business relationship vs. a brick wall. I hope you sell a car and gain a loyal customer.

I've got a deposit on a 4dr RB loaded for $35400. I have that price in writing. Virginia dealership. The only catch is that I still have to wait 2 1/2 months for it, but I don't mind. Definitely do NOT pay that absurd markup.

So, essentially invoice? Are they charging you a "processing" fee, too?

I'll be honest: I'm not real sure. I'll give them a call and update here. I always buy the warranty and wheel coverage, so they'll be getting that extra money from me. But since this is my 5th VW since 2004, I'm expecting not to get shafted.

i bought my car from a long time family friend, weve bought several cars from his company and he always hooks it up. paid a tad under msrp, but he told us that since these cars are the coolest cars any vw dealer has ever had, they try and sell them for a 4k premium. and, your average consumer will pay that after they get behind the wheel. so thats probably what theyre holding out for. unfortunately, they dont want to sell these cars to the informed buyer. the car for the price is out there, just keep looking. what about that dealer that posted he had 3 for msrp? did they sell?

I'm surprised any dealer is still able to sell these as msrp. The 2012 or 2013 R can be had for invoice without even negotiation in Houston.

If you look on autotrader, you will find some dealers with 3 or 4 2012s sitting on the lot.
