Saw this thread yesterday...this morning I did a quick Autotrader run, and it shows 257 Golf R's available currently at US dealers. Most of them are posting MSRP as asking price, a few have discounts listed, I think I came across only one with an inflated price.
Don't know what the OP ended up doing, but I'd say it would be pretty easy to find one that you like for MSRP or less.

I've got a deposit on a 4dr RB loaded for $35400. I have that price in writing. Virginia dealership. The only catch is that I still have to wait 2 1/2 months for it, but I don't mind. Definitely do NOT pay that absurd markup.

So, essentially invoice? Are they charging you a "processing" fee, too?

I'll be honest: I'm not real sure. I'll give them a call and update here. I always buy the warranty and wheel coverage, so they'll be getting that extra money from me. But since this is my 5th VW since 2004, I'm expecting not to get shafted.

My 2013 is in (4DR loaded) and dealer offers me 36152.00 which he says is 500.00 over invoice 35652.00. Thoughts?

i bought my car from a long time family friend, weve bought several cars from his company and he always hooks it up. paid a tad under msrp, but he told us that since these cars are the coolest cars any vw dealer has ever had, they try and sell them for a 4k premium. and, your average consumer will pay that after they get behind the wheel. so thats probably what theyre holding out for. unfortunately, they dont want to sell these cars to the informed buyer. the car for the price is out there, just keep looking. what about that dealer that posted he had 3 for msrp? did they sell?

I'm surprised any dealer is still able to sell these as msrp. The 2012 or 2013 R can be had for invoice without even negotiation in Houston.

If you look on autotrader, you will find some dealers with 3 or 4 2012s sitting on the lot.

Got it for 35792 and since I've bought 2 previous GTI's from the sales manager he never asked for a deposit.

Pasadena VW has a simple formula. Sticker price + $4000 to $4500 (listed on window of car as'dealer markup') depending on the options. That takes balls to slap a customer in the face so blatantly

Got quoted invoice for a 2012. Worth it? Or should I go for a 2013?

For me, it would depend on the miles on the 2012. In my case, given how cars are often test driven, it was worth the extra $$ for the piece of mind knowing I was the only customer to have driven my car. I got to help take it out of its pajamas and then I drove the car into the service area. My salesman of many years drove the mile down the road to fill it with gas. Other than that, its been only me behind the wheel. I paid about $100 over invoice for mine in May; Tornado Red loaded 2 dr, just the way I ordered it.
