Rebuilt transmission? Jump on it already![]()

So a buddy who has too many cars wants me to buy it for not a whole bunch of money.
And to be honest it's not a terrible fit. We need a bigger car for my wife, and I need a car with 4 seats (her A3). Other than the glass transmissions what else should I be afraid of? It has a brand new (rebuilt) transmission, new timing chains, new O2 sensors, and a couple other new parts that I can't remember right now.
I just drove it to my buddy's house to detail it and it drives very well. The inside is a very nice place to be, and I've always thought Audi hit understated luxury on the head with this vintage. It will be a great road trip car for us and the two kiddos. It has a couple options: the solar sunroof, the rear heated seats, and a chitty old NAV.
What say ye, TCL?
Very handsome!
I love the wood inlay color.
Alcantara - so my kids have something to wipe snot on.
[edit] Teaser shot of the LS2 Miata behind it. Maiden voyage out the garage and around the block yesterday!!!111!!1omgbbqwtf!!!

Throw an Audi engineer down a hole with a ladder and he will fashion a shovel from it and tunnel his way out

Looks well-cared for, so I say go for itA8 stories here lately seem to be if the car is well maintained or if you can handle the work, it is a great car.

Sounds like the big gotchas have been addressed. Other than the heated steering wheel not working (not a biggie in TX, I'd think), can't think of a reason why not.

The only thing to worry about with A8/S8's are the armrests and transmissions![]()
replica wheels are for wankers

I'm currently in the market for a new car, and a big sedan of about this vintage is on the radar. Owning a W140 or an E38 doesn't scare me at all, but the idea of owning something like this gives me night terrors.
Then again I've never owned any of these cars so I can't exactly dissuade you based on experience. But the Audis that I did have were totally reliable, so I guess what I'm trying to say is go for it?

My dad had 3 A8 (TDI variants over here), but he never ever had any problem at all with any of them. If it has been mantained properly I would not think twice. It's made for long trips.![]()

Buy it!
Look at her face. She wants you to have it.
P.S. I can't help but notice you never mentioned the mileage..
#10
I actually had the mileage and price written up, but deleted both. Let's just say I think it's a really good deal for 73k and the shape it's in. It was used as his dad's second car at their Aspen chalet, then brought back to Houston as his wife's DD for the past couple years. No wrecks, but there is a fair amount of road rash typical with a 10 year old car.

Well, what do you have to lose? Do it!

I am not sure how old you are....
but ever since the movie Ronin I have always, and will always want a S8 just like the movie.
03GTI4Me has pointed that out

It's probably one of the few Audi's I'd buy. I say that knowing I'd rather take the obvious BMW given the chance, but if you get a spanking deal, why not?

I see a black D2 S8 several times per week near my house, such a gorgeous machine. I'd also like an A8L though too, did they do an S-line package for that?

I like the D2 S8's a lot, and I looked for one for a while but I couldn't find one in the condition that I wanted so I ended up with something else. If this one was well cared for I say go for it!!

No way I'd pay 20k for one.. that much coin will buy a really nice Phaeton, V8 or W12 ..

what yr what mileage ?
what things have been replaced during his ownership ? What new things will be replaced during your ownership ?
i'd double check the reliability of that generation's cars too
is he dumping it off to you b/c maintenance bills are creeping up ?
are there any reliable repair sources near you (dealership/independents) ??
