Sounds like a pretty cool idea. The red arrow part you can get one from a base rabbit maybe even a jetta and it doesnt have the cover on it. Could give you the extra space you need since it doesnt have the cover.

Heres the deal.
I have a garmin navi
I want to mount the navi where the purple arrow is pointing on a hinge, so that it can swivel down for use and swivel up to hide. I'm trying to make this look clean.
Here are my current Ideas.. after ripping apart my dash, it looks like there may be enough room to buy another piece (red arrow) and cut out the stuff I don't need. Then I can mount the navi on the inside of the little "pop up" hinge pice and insert the whole unit upside down in that area. I looked and from what I can see there may or may not be enough room.
any other ideas/suggestions?
(the first picture is not my car, just used for reference, second pic is my car)
Cheers.

The purple arrow is pointing at an interior trim piece called the center cover.
It is held on only by plastic clips.
Its purpose is to conceal the mounting points for various other parts of the dash.
Remove the cover and cut underneath it, and parts of your dash may become loose.
There is a small recess behind the cover (to provide access to large dash piece mounting bolts).
Enough space to stash a couple of folded paper $$$ for emergency cash,
which I sometimes do when traveling out of town
Still, your concept seems a good idea, just wanted to help with some detail
Here are some pics on the topic from my library
removal and detail on the covers mounting points

Thanks for the info! Yeah I ripped it apart. I bought a new tray and a new plastic piece so if I mess this up it will look like it never happened.
