OEM+ is the way to go IMO. The modding community has come a long way from what it used to be.

The current generation is more about Internet chatting time behind obscure names (Highlander Lord anyone?) than actually meeting people face to face. I laugh everytime I see the anxiety attack show up on my nephew and niece face (18 and 17 respectively [sorry no pictures]) about having to interact with someone in person and they don't have and chatting device to hide behind off. Heck they don't even want to go the mall to watch the latest movie they actually get all stressed about having to get of the couh to actually go there and not having there technological device grafted to their face for 10+ straight hours. Granted they are not all like that as my younger nephew (15)goes nuts every time he hears Turbo go by a really factory modded Mustang so there is still hope or asks me if he can take a ride with me around the track (granted he does wear a helmet and all the possible straps)
IMO i preffer to follow the fucntion/ form for mods and concentrate on the arease where I can feel it while driving. On the outside I like to have it subttle just enough to notice there is a differenc but not enought to garner LEO's attention.
Why yes; that she tropper has sideburns...

Modding your car to be "cool" is lame. What eveyone else thinks about the mod, I don't give a chit.
I mod my cars to keep them interesting to me, helps me keep the car longer. A mod is usually cheaper than a new car. Most of my mods have been conservative.

I guess it depends on where you live - here in Florida completely stock cars/ SUV's could be considered unusual. Especially Benzes/ Bimmer's/ Porsche's, Corvettes, Range Rovers, rare to see stuff like that stock here. Tint/ slight drop and aftermarket wheels seem to be done in the first 1,000 miles. I don't many riced out Honda's or the old F&F stuff that used to be common here - that crap is almost non-existent anymore.
I'm into OEM plus for the most part - I can't leave any of my cars stock - ever.

People still and always mod cars.....
Its not as noticable as a bright green riced out civic that youre comparing them to
But there still is and always will be modified cars:

modding cars is better than modding your nose with Coke... least thats what i tell my father when he complains... cost might not be so different though.

i modify pretty much everything i own to my tastes, always have always will.

I have noticed the amount of cars rolling around with mods has dropped off almost completely around me.
I recently said goodbye to the flashy stuff myself. I have a boring A4 that will get some basic things (exhaust, filter, plugs/wires) and I'm going to call it a day. My age is the main reason for this though...

I sort of agree but have to stress that, I can't remember ever seeing a car with aCombat kit that was lowered IRL. The never lowered those ****ing things which made them even uglier. Haha.
But people still mod plenty where I'm from. Just not strictly aesthetically, anymore.
I'm really just here for the pancakes.
I'm Sorry Hachi... I love you.

I got pretty conservative with my modding (besides suspension/brakes/lighter wheels/engine mounts/intake etc) after I put a VF engineering ****charger on my VR GTi. I ruined that car.
#56
i don't mod my cars anymore. i kinda stopped when the cool factor went down around 3 or 4 years ago. i think that i'll be able to get back into modding cars if it gets cool again.

People mod subtle crap on a Mini Cooper now. I think between Fast and Furious having more sequels then collective writing brilliance and tons of hate for the ricer in general really shut it down
#58
i just got done watching fast 5 this exact minute. no better and no worse than anything else out there in the smash 'em up genre. some very lovely ladies. especially at the nighttime streetrace scene. cool LFA footage. the dodge cop cars seemed better than they had a right to be. sounded mean. nice variety; surprisingly blatant tuner exposure (AE?). and you gotta love getting that hand print without giving up the handful.
if you guys think fast and the furious somehow ushered in modding to the masses, you are very young or weren't paying attention. it was the other way around. the first one was a stroke of luck, timing, and luck. i was at SEMA the year before, the year of, and the year after. it was a nice tie-in, and it certainly gave the supra/2JZ some extra legs it may or may not have needed, but this movie should not define the hobby for you. that would be unfortunate.
i especially love the comment that someone stopped modding because it fell out of style, but is eagerly awaiting its return so that they can recommence. sounds stressful. like the famous mkiv polls: "what should be my next mod . . . " priceless.

Over the years as many people have said before, the modding has change from who has the biggest wing and fart can and whos cars the loudest to now where it is people are doing OEM+, JDM, KDM and the list goes on and on. Sometimes, you don't realize you are next to one unless you know what you are looking for. I have seen several OEM+ cars, that I have had to take a second look to notice that they were. Plus alot people now, don't want to have the attention of the law while driving. To the police it looks like a stock vehicle, that is one reason why I like the OEM+.
#61
I love cars, but the problem is they are like schroedinger's hobby. They're always in a quantum superstate of being both awesome and a huge waste of time and money... until observation momentarily forces them into one state or another.

Modding cars is as cool as the owner of the car feels. In general, I don't think it even matters. People should do it for themselves, not because of someone else's opinion....unless that someone else controls your budget. I have always modified my cars, and will always do so.

I'm with the other guy.
Ask any 16 yr old, and they aren't excited about driving or getting a car. When they do, it's just an appliance to them like their phone or laptop.

I still want that car ... Veilside kit and all ... the 92-95 Civic EX Coupes were just a good looking car, and hey, who didn't like Veilside back in the day?
#66
You must have not been looking hard enough.
I will always modify my car in some way, shape, or form.
#67
I'm glad modding was a fad for a lot of people because all of those terrible builds are gone now.
When I look at a car for the most part I can instantly tell if the owner is a true car enthusiast or if they are doing it to be trendy.
