Thread: Alternative Intake Option

  1. 04-30-2012 11:25 AM #1
I'm sure it's been thought of, but why couldn't we take the existing air filter out of the engine cover (so it's empty) and add a high flow cone filter to the circular entry of the engine cover to sit in the same space the aftermarket ones do?

most people try to eliminate the engine cover bc its a pain in the ass.

Not to mention tht style above sucks the air right off the DUMB hot tranny cooler

Best intake for an auto be is the forge HANDS DOWN

If you want a cheaper solution just buy a neuspeed pipe and then do something like this...keeps the filter further away from the tranny cooler (This is my car by the way and this setup works a lot better than the standard neuspeed unit and is MUCH cheaper than Forge)

Its Pretty much the same idea as the forge unit it just doesnt have the pretty carbon fiber surrounding the filter. It still sits directly in front of the inlet that the stock airbox hooks up to and sucks all that fresh air in. My neuspeed filter would be very hot to the touch after driving, and now with the relocated filter its always cool to the touch

it may be sligtly more beneficial then the neuspeed. nut the forge is a sealed system essentially and only pulls the air from outside.

I don't like the price of forge either. if you had a manual tranny id say go with the CTS turbo intake hangs down

Yeah I'm definitely not saying its as good as forge's unit cause its not. Just thought I'd share what I had done maybe I can improve on it somehow. Works pretty well as is though

Some people have done this in the early days of the 2.0T forum.

the stock airbox and filter technically does flow enough air for a K04 engine...

So With my stock airbox and K&N filter, I will get plenty of needed air for a 1+ unitronic tune and an upgraded DV?

I have the stock air box and simply got a higher flow "performace" filter from ECS and I run UNI 1+ without any issues. Not sure if it is the optimum, but I have plenty of punch for my needs.

Yes it will be completely fine.

The stock air box may be able to support a ko4 but w/ a good intake u can benefit. And some companies like APRs Ko4 tune your car won't run properly without the stock air box
