Does anyone know of a CF hood supplier for the .:R? I ask not to lighten weight or to increase my VTEC, but because VWOA are @$$holes who won't warranty my front-end paint damage. I've posted up in the past about the pitting and peeling that started almost from the day I took delivery. My hood looks like swiss cheese, the front bumper and mirrors aren't much better. But the quotes I've had for repainting range from $1600-3000. The problem is FAR more noticeable on the hood, so I wondered if I just replace the hood, and leave it plain or maybe put some sort of vinyl wrap graphic over it, it'll be a little less obvious than my pitted and spotty red hood, and a lot cheaper.

OSIR and Seibon both make MKV CF Hoods in several designs and styles. I'll post you some links as soon as I find them.

Alternately, you could just look around junkyards for a red GTI, the MKV hood is the same throughout all golf bodies and the Jetta

    EDIT:

    Seibon: http://www.amazon.com/SEIBON-06-08-G.../dp/B002BLXB3O

OSIR Double Sided: http://www.zmaxautosport.com/osdeflliwedo1.html (single sided currently out of stock, but they have them all; vented, unvented etc)

The idea of performing cannibalism on the weaker species appeals to me.

Maybe I could find some doors and a bumper in blue, yellow or green and make myself look like some sort of frankenstein Harlequin edition.

Jetta hoods are the same part but if you get a red one it will be a different color (salsa red vs. tornado red). It's a little darker.

    Don't do the CF hood!

Be patient and find a TR GTI hood and then put some XPEL on that to prevent another case of swiss cheese.

I can't believe you expect VW to warranty you for paint chips but it should have been handled when you got the car if there was an issue regarding a defect from the start.

Easy solution, just wrap the entire hood and have the benefit of being able to change the look if you wish for cheaper than repainting.

Best solution, find a hood in good condition or have yours repainted and then protect it with some clear bra.

Good paint jobs are expensive...even a good wrap job won't be cheap.
If your gas cap light comes on even if you think you tightened the cap, try pulling on the cap as you tighten it. Worked for me.

The rust warranty does not cover anything where the raw material has been exposed to the elements. If there's a paint chip from a rock, it's the owners responsibility to get it touched up before corrosion occurs.

Not giving you a hard time, just stating what I learned through my service advisor.

Not a fan of CF in general, a black wrap with black roof and front grill may look good.

OP, sorry to hear of your paint woes, regardless of whose fault. Sounds frustrating

General / open question on thread topic: for those against a CF hood - how come? I'm just curious what the down sides are. Not planning to get one myself, but if my hood were jacked up in a way not covered by warranty / insurance I would consider a CF replacement (painted to look original) for the weight savings. Do they tend to not hold up well, or what else would be a downside?

It's an issue with Torando Red...which funny enough in German is TornadoRot.

You should probably read up on the issue before commenting, and I don't mean anything rude by that... Just that there is a lot more to this than 1 guy who couldn't get some chips warrantied

The Tornado Red "issue" has been going on since the MKIVs, and goes way beyond "paint chips"... The TR paint peels and flakes even when no hits have occured; and at a rate like 5-10 times higher than any of the other VW colors...

OP has a great thread on the issue.

Great info. I didn't even know this. Although I have CW, but I did learn something new today! hahaha

Thanks...if it was a known issue, it should have been handled from the start as I stated. If anything, this is just another example of how unreliable VW service and warranties are and they certainly aren't going to do anything about it now so it's a moot point. I try to read as much as I can and learn about things but sorry, I don't have time to read every single thread on this forum and I just respond to issues as they come along. Especially when I don't have the issue myself, I'm likely not going to go searching about it to read up on every detail but thanks for informing me and others who didn't know.

OP, I think a CF hood is a good option too...I would have it paint matched if I got one and also get the aero latches for safety. The main issue I've seen with CF parts is they almost never fit as well as OEM parts but you can usually get it good enough as long as you are not too OCD about it.

I met a guy last weekend that had the Seibon carbon hood on his MKV GTI. It was pretty nice, it fit really well and would have looked like an OEM hood except for the fact that the middle was the carbon finish and sides were painted to match the car.

He had one of the double sided versions. If you do go CF make sure you get double sided, meaning its carbon on the outside and inside otherwise it won't save any weight.

The guy claimed the hood weighed 10 lbs....not sure if that is right but it did feel pretty light when lifting it up.

OP - What area of do you live in? I'm pretty sure you need to remove CF hoods for the winter if you get far below freezing. That could just be a myth, I'm not really sure.

    Unfair comparison...

That car could be painted in pink paisley and lime green stripes and it would still look good...
