i noticed yesterday there was a few spots of tree sap on my roof. I tried using turtle wax bug& tar remover which someone recomended, and it did not work. I also tried rubbing alcohol, which did not work. i then tried WD-40, which also did not work.

What will take tree sap off a car?? It has only been on a max of 2 days. I was away for 2 days and saw it when i came home. Theres no way it wouldve gone un-noticed before then.

I washed my car today too, and tried removing sap after.

If it's only been on there two days, then a simple hot car wash would do the trick.

But sounds like it's been on there much longer, and you've already tried polishing, so the most logical solution is to use a Clay Bar and lube to remove the stubborn bits

I just use Meguiar's from autozone.
wash your car, while wet use soap and the claybar.. dont worry about the spray just use the soapy water and go with the body of the car while rubbing. Do small sections at a time. While youre at it do the entire car. You will love the results.

SLX Denatured alcohol works very well. Use a microfiber and turn it often.

Clay bars work well if the sap is soft, they take a while if it's hard.

    Even works on convertible tops:

As a last resort at the dealership we use Thinner and a microfiber, will wipe right off. Then just polish off the slight marring the thinner wil leave assuming it didnt penetrate your clear coat.

All day everyday as the end all be all first step before correction for the past 6-7 years ive been detailing. Clay bar takes to long, and quite frankly isnt any less harmful. Little bit of thinner sprayed onto the clean microfiber will do work immediately.

First step before correction! Because it will slightly haze your paint since you are doing some paint correction (buffing) you will bring it back to a shine. But for the average person that is not doing any corrections and wants to remove the tar or sap. They can use Tarminator (available locally at your local oreilly's auto)with out any harm to your paint.

I'm not trying to make this a detail contest of who's been detailing longer (19 years )
OP asked what is the best way to remove tar or sap, I'm sure he is NOT a detailer or else he would know.

Abe suggested it seeing it first hand when I detailed his R before WITW!

OP Let us know how your sap removal turned out.

for clicks from WITW's (Most Definitely, bug, sap and tar free!) ask anyone that attended! Wait, wait put some before viewing the pic

Much for all the detailers out there it's a tough job and we sometimes don't get the credit we deserve.

Realistically, because i just did this 2 days ago on both a black 1996 honda crv and a 2012 velocity red mazda 3 to demonstrate for a customer that its possible to use a small amount of thinnner with light pressure and that wax will infact remove the slight marring. Not sealant, not polish, and i used both dodo juice, a cheap meguiars wax from advance auto, and what ide consider to be the worst wax ive ever used(ardex viper wax) lol. But im also agreeing with you, i dont know if ide suggest this to joe shmoe down the road to not rub hard because it will get ugly fast haha
