Thread: Buying a 2004 GLI. Advice.

  1. 04-30-2012 03:33 PM #1
Hey guys, I'm either buying a 2004 or 2005 GLI here soon. Just wondering what to look for when buying these cars. Like common problems. I know about the timing belt issues and them needing to be changed. Looking for other advice. Good things, bad things. Just things I might need to know.

    THANKS!

Yeah I have an '02 GTI with the AWP engine which is the same as the GLI if its a 1.8T with recaro's and 6 speed

the transmission and clutch are strong with these cars.

There is a recall on the coilpacks, so go make sure that is done if you start experiencing misfires. The CEL is sensitive, so one misfire will trip it. it resets after 50 miles if it doesn't happen again. Not a big deal if its errors like that, that trip the CEL.

Electronically the sunroof has a mind of its own....it might flap open and close, almost as if it's speaking to you....at least thats how I take it.

If it has been in winter and will be driving on salty roads protect it with thorough washes, claying bi-annually, and waxing to keep it from rusting.

One more thing, use full synthetic oil....if that is used and you switch to regular then some sludge issues will occur...bad for turbo.

take care of the car and it will take care of you....strong cars
