so i read through the DIY and the Dieselgeek doesn't really show you how to adjust it... i would kill for our cars to be as easy as a MK4

basically all i have is 1st. the shifter seems like it is pretty much disconnected... i push it down over up and i get first. i go to neutral and go to first and i get it. trying to find the rest of the gears is like there isnt anything even hooked up. i was looking at the linkage while i had my girl friend play with it and she found umm 3rd around where 5th should be she said...

any idea how to start from ground zero?

So wait, 1st is where reverse should be and 3rd is where 5th should be?

If the bolts are tight (that should be tight) it should be one end or the other, not spread out like that. Check the top of the transmission and make sure the side to side bolt isn't loose or broken. There is a black plastic piece that the adjustment bolt threads into, make sure that isn't broken (they commonly break after age).

Also check the shifter underneath the leather boot. There is a bolt that faces forward towards the dash, make sure that is tight. start there, then report back.

Another simple fix is rebuilding the shifter box by replacing all of the bushings. This revitalizes the entire box. Parts total $22 from www.1stvwparts.com

Alright, so everything is hooked up as normal. So I played with it in the car after knowing how these shifters work, or at least having a better. What it seems is that the front to back just needs some adjusting but the side to side is almost no where to be found. As well it feels like an old MK2 shifter that is needing a rebuild. Though nothing on the shift tower is broken or loose. I would say what I am describing is both needing to be adjusted but I can move this shifter in weird manners and I still can't find most gears. Continue messing with it when I get home I guess...

so i got home from physical therapy and took a look at it again...

...lets chalk this up to it buying the car as an incomplete car and rebuild process. the person i got it from fed the cables back through the mounting bracket. in my other corrado i just disconnected my bracket so i didn't notice or well plain forgot that i didn't have the C clips that secure the cables to the bracket. so i took the C clips from red rado and put them in this car and it's good to go!

thanks for all those who chimed in! ...i'm an idiot haha! i guess it's easy to forget things when you have to stop working on it for a while for an injury
