$20K for base Passat. Definitely hard to beat.
There are no old Porsches - just new owners.

200hp turbo 6 speed hot hatch with crazy standard features for around a little less than 20k.

probably going to be a fun car

    older model:

    w210 e55 amg or sn95 4v cobras

For a new car? Probably the Accent 5-door. Tops out in the 15,000 range with all the options, doesn't do anything bad, and will probably outlive anything in the next segment up.

subaru forester. reliable, easy to work on, can tow/haul a fair amount of stuff, easily seats a few people, and comes with a pretty long list of options.
    Regarding DD'ing a tuned Evo:

Anything in that $500 car thread, because, you still get a car and it only cost $500..

For a new car, the price:performance ratio of these two will be hard to beat.

Since the OP said new cars...

2012 Impala (if you have access to the GM employee discount). GM is knocking an extra $8k off the regular employee price. You can get a fully loaded LTZ for $23,586 or a fully loaded LT for $20,744.

I vote base WRX. For ~$25k, you get 265hp, AWD, and 5-door hatch utility. And sporty.

Probably best to stay with new cars in this topic.

You could get some really off-the-wall answers among used vehicles.

This is correct, but cars like the 04 GTO, E36 M3 are all great deals

And with the LTZ you get that super sweet 3.6L V6 that nails down some pretty impressive mileage figures and power.

That's the best deal of all of these cars, save for the Accent.

All of the trim levels of the 2012 Impala have the 300HP 3.6L V-6 and the 6 speed auto. Even the LS. However, the LS doesn't get the $8k discount.

For 5k you'd be hard pressed to get a working (read under 150k miles) E36 M3 anyplace .... a much better "most car for the $" would probably be:

Beating 100k+ supercars with a few cheap upgrades and offering the practicality of a 4 door family sedan combined with very decent fuel economy on cruise
